A wonderful CD collection indeed! I have bought all of the Brilliant Classics Complete Collections and have not been upset with any set. The only thing I didn't like about this set (and only because I can compare with my others), the information was on the outside instead of the inside. Meaning that all of the works were located on the outside box instead of on the flap like Mozart, Beethoven and Bach.

The set is much more colorful than the last couple also. You can see how much time they spend on making it look "brilliant". Definitely a wonderful deal for the price... and you should not even give it a second thought.

Music : Rameau
There was a time when I first saw this CD in a store. While I looked on back for the listing of the pieces, I read the print on the bottom that mentioned what kinds of instruments did Bob James played. One of them was the Mini-Moog. It also mentioned "Oberheim," "Roland," and "Yamaha." These names made me think they're synthesizers. I suspected this must be inspired by Wendy Carlos' interpretation of Bach. However, I didn't want to waste my money on a full priced CD. I wanted to get it on sale.

Well, one day I was at a flea market looking through CDs. In that box of compact discs was THAT particular one. I got that for about $10! When I first listened to the CD back home, it was very much what I expected. I'm not a jazz fan and I don't have to be. This particular one that ... Read More

This is a very nice collection of pieces that are rarely heard, rightfully so in some cases. But others, such as the Beethoven Variations for 2 pianos, are wonderful - but the piano sound! Ouch! The pianos are not even in tune! Still, it is a collection worth having, especially at this price.

4.Bach: Four Orchestral Suites (The 1954 Recordings) from: Testament UK

Music : Bach: Four Orchestral Suites (The 1954 Recordings)
This Klemp set is so rare and so good.

It's got so much stuff on it. The 1955 complete Bach suites, (which by the way could be regarded as definitive!) It's got Klemperer's only other Handel recording (aside from his recording of the Messiah). It's not one of the well known Concerto Grosso, but it's a dark one and I can see why Klemp was drawn to it. It's also got a rare Cherubini overture which was recorded in one take, the Gluck Iphegenie overture and Klemp's own Rameau variations. The Bach is in excellent mono and the rest is in stereo. The booklet notes explain the nature of these recordings, which is very enjoyable to read and know about.

It's pretty well full price, but it's so good and so worth it!

Hofmann - particularly late Hofmann - may be an acquired taste.
Despite having been the protégé of Anton Rubinstein, "the wonderful boy" was recognized from quite an early age as the exemplar of a modern style of playing - textually faithful, eschewing swooning or bombast. (See, for example, the references to Hofmann in Henry Lahee's wonderful survey from 1900, Famous Pianists of Today and Yesterday.)
Still, a number of younger colleagues expressed ambivalence. Horowitz was floored by Hofmann's keyboard command - everyone was - but he, Artur Rubinstein and Arrau, to name just three - seem not to have been terribly moved by Hofmann's musicianship.
But which Hofmann are we considering? His playing for the gramophone - as early as 1903 and as late as 1935 - was as disciplined as it was imaginative ... Read More

Brahms composed an astounding amount of piano music. Variations were a Classical form that long fascinated him. His most famous are The Handel Variations Opus 24, and the difficult Paganini Variations in which he shadowed the style of Liszt. Today this work is often compared with Bach's Goldberg and Beethoven's Diabelli Variations. Some of his shorter works include his Intermezzos,Romanzes, Rhapsodies,Caprices, and Fantasies. To me these are Brahms's most most important and expressive pieces he composed. My favorite pieces are Intermezzo 116 No. 4 and Intermezzo 118 No. 2. He brought these short forms to a new level of eloquence and expression. The first Intermezzo of Opus 118 is the very essence of Brahms's unmistakable sound and complexity in his music. I'll confess, I bought this set to fill the gaps in my piecemeal Brahms ... Read More

10.Prokofiev: Complete Music for Solo Piano by: Frederic Chiu

Music : Prokofiev: Complete Music for Solo Piano
There is a wealth of great music on this disc, and all at an unbelievable price. The set does not start brilliantly, with a sonata set that sounds as though it has been recorded in his front room. Some of the playing is a bit woolly, but you can tell that his heart is there, especially in the 6th sonata, where the sparks positively fly. For my taste, the 8th starts off way too slow, and the exciting close of the first movement is too fast with way too much pedal, losing all detail. His antipathy towards the 1st sonata is obvious from the sleeve notes, and he plays it rather aggressively.
The sonata recordings come from the beginning of his recording career, and it becomes evident that his control has improved over time. The next disc, entitled `early fame' has an absolutely stonking `suggestion diabolique', the best ... Read More
