I enjoyed reading the reviews of parents whose kids have recently discovered "Classical Kids." I'm about to order the boxed set for my kids, ages 21, 19 and 16 because the nineteen-year-old, who has a college radio show and loves a wide variety of music, remembers this series (then only on cassette) with great affection and wants to hear them again. Those of you wondering whether it's worth it or not to try to introduce kids to classical music this way, be assured it works. We've turned one of Mr. Bach's lines into a family "saying:" "the more you study, the more you know; the more you know, the more you appreciate; the more you appreciate, the more you love." A great series!

The performances on this recording are utterly superb. Ohlsson has Chopin in his heart and soul and it shines out everywhere (and it's a special pianist who can claim that!). There may be a few affectations here and there, but they're minor, and it is Chopin, so that might be somewhat unavoidable, ultimately (it must have been incredible to hear Chopin play these himself--these are obviously very important pieces in his oeuvre). Overall, the presentation is, as I said, superb. And the music is to die for!

I have been collecting the New Year's concerts for a while, since the 1987 one, this was the only one missing, so I was really happy when it finally was out. Even though it is indeed a great performance in general, the program of music included that year was not the best. I particularly don't find appealing the inclusion of the Schubert's pieces and the ones by Mozart does not mix well with the Strauss's music, at least for my taste, I found that music kind of interrupting the mood of the concert. It is interesting though, to listen to Rossini's "La Gazza Ladra" mostly because Abbado has proven over the years to be a master performing and recording this overture and the fact that this opens the concert makes it a "non intrusive" piece. Apart from the usual encores at the end, maybe the most known ... Read More

6.Schubert: The Collector's Edition from: EMI Classics

Music : Schubert: The Collector's Edition
These CDs are a marvelous and representative collection of Schubert's works; while it does not claim to be a "complete" collection, it's the closest thing I've found on the market and with the exception of some incomplete (early)quartets, it wants for nothing. All the major works are brilliantly played, excellent Trout quintet, "Death of a Maiden" quartet, and some lesser known sonatinas as well as lovely Appegione sonata, to name just the most played. A huge bulk if not all, of his Leider and Masses and piano sonatas are also included. In general, there are about 2/3 orchestral/concerto/sonata works and 1/3 choral/vocal works (this is not an exact number as I don't have the box with me).

What I found amazing about this set is how consistently high the quality level remains (perhaps simply ... Read More

I wrote my doctoral dissertation on William Kapell (we share the same school, and my teacher was a student of his), and to still see the outpouring of admiration and love for Kapell's art is still very moving for me.

I initially discovered Don Dorsey and his "Bachbusters" CD in the mid-80s while I was looking for audiophile demonstration pieces for my new stereo system. I loved the recording from the first listen and it became one of my all-time favorite CDs. Thus, when I found "Beethoven or Bust" a few years later, I bought it instantly. No asking or listening or anything like that. At first play, I was somewhat taken back and didn't like it nearly as well as the earlier "Bachbusters." Well, that first impression gradually changed and now I'd rank it right along with "Bachbusters" as outstanding.

It's fun to muse about what Bach or Beethoven might think about these recordings. Hmmmm. My guess is that they'd like them. They'd marvel at the new instruments and the pristine sound reproduction and be somewhat amused ... Read More

This CD features recordings made in 1966. I first heard him playing in Newcastle, Australia shortly after this, so the CD brings back happy memories, though at the time we heard him playing Chopin and Beethoven, I think.

The A Major Sonata is a gem, but we also enjoy the Hungarian Melody which we have only recently discovered.

Warmly recommended

I really don't know why, but the Variations and sonatas in this set are often neglected and underrated by pianists. They are wonderful music! I've been playing some of them since I was a piano student.....and I still enjoy as much as in the old days! Of course the well known 32 sonatas are worth having...but if you miss the works in this set.....well, you are REALLY missing something beautiful. Brendel plays flawlessly, giving us not only his masterful technique, but his passion.
This is a set to be discovered, like a hidden treasure.
