Irma Thomas cast a musical spotlight for me this summer when one of her tracks, "The Same Love That Made Me Laugh," from I Believe to My Soul floated at the top of my personal top ten and wouldn't come down. I needed to listen to more. How amazed I am at the sensational "Simply Grand"! The opening track penned by John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival fame was on his CD Revival. Irma's gospel treatment is delightful. Dr. John joins her on piano on "If I Had Any Sense I'd Go Back Home" with Irma's bluey vocals. "Too Much Thinking" tries to put on a smile despite a life beset with constant challenges, "I'm never ready when my rent comes due, I just go hungry when my money's through, I keep quiet when the bill collector calls, Most times those things don't worry me at all." It should be said that Sonny Landreth is blindingly fast on guitar. Yet, after trying to like this album for more than a week, I just do not. And the reason is that my ears detect no soul at all in his playing. I am reminded of several other virtuoso guitarists (Walter Trout and Johnny Winter most specifically) who make an awful lot of noise, but very little listenable music. I am also missing entirely the Blues aspect of this recording. It's rock-and-roll. A little more attention to melody and continuity, and less fret-finger acrobatics, would help a lot.

This is a collection of Christmas songs by performers who recorded for Alligator Records in 1992. Alligator Records is a blues label, so all of these performers are blues musicians. These are very good Christmas blues songs. My personal favorite is "Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'" by Tinsley Ellis, but the other songs are good, too. Fans of the blues will enjoy it.

Louisiana blues ace Tab Benoit recorded this album using another Louisiana legend Leroux as his back up band for the album. The title track tackles the subject of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and it's effect on the city of New Orleans. Tab is in fine form throughout this album. His guitar playing is crisp and clean and his voice is as gruff and soulful as ever. Benoit has been churning out his special brand of Cajun blues for well over a decade now and it is a formula that he continues to improve on . Highlights include "Don't Make No Sense", "Power Of The Pontchartrain", "Midnight And Lonesome", "Sac-Au-Lait Fishing", and "One Foot In The Bayou". Tab also covers a cool version of Stephen Still's "For What It's Worth" with lyrics as fitting today as when they were written 40 years ago. ... Read More

George Winston's piano playing is always interesting, and it's great to hear him work out on songs in a New Orleans mode. His take on music by Booker, Butler and Dr John is actually pretty impressive. He's got his own approach and the chops to pull it off. The fact that this album supports the Katrina victims also comes as an extra recommendation.
