Not too many bands over the last forty years or so have come out of the gate with an introductory LP with such a lasting impact as: "Murmur".
This record created something entirely different in 1983, it was rock as much as it was pop, and it wasn't even close to anything else released during the early eighties. The biggest kicker to the whole deal was that R.E.M. came from a small town in Georgia.

How in the world, can an album fit in between Molly Hatchet & Thriller? How can mumbled/mixed down vocals and chiming Rickenbacker guitars hold their own next to moonwalking and 27 minute jams of: "Whipping Post?" Well, R.E.M. was about unknown to everyone north of Richmond, Virginia and south of Jacksonville, Florida in early 1983, when IRS thrust this force onto a world ... Read More

Accelerate can be one of those albums which fans, upset with R.E.M.'s last few releases, may judge too highly, throwing out words like comeback just to describe a vague adult-rock, easy going consistency in a way which almost insults some of their finer intricacies.

Along with The B-52's, Athens Georgia had a second classic debut to foist onto the world in the 80's. "Murmur" delivered a fully formed R.E.M. sound to an unsuspecting public, heard by musical cossnoti and launching thousands of new bands in their wake. Propelled by the jangle-pop of "Radio Free Europe" and undeniable band chemistry, this is one of the top albums of that decade.

The qualities that defined the first half of R.E.M.'s career are already in full bloom on "Murmur." Peter Buck's jangley but muscular guitar propelled the sometimes bucolic sounds of the atmospheric songs. The rhythm section of Mike Mills and Bill Berry managed the odd variety of songs with the appropriate style. And on top if it all were Michael Stipe's mumbling, incoherent vocals muttering vague lyrics (with Berry adding ... Read More

This is a great album. It is one of my favorite Sonic Youth albums. Unlike a lot of their albums this one is not so experimental in sound, and is easier to listen to. If you have a Sonic Youth itch and you are not sure which album to start with this one is a good choice.

REM is a full of view first impression music, their lyrics touch our soul in their high worked melodies. As well knowed by everybody.

Automatic for the People just say how weak is our passage way and how come becarefull we have to be with.

Compared to the murky, modern sound of Murmur, this, R.E.M.'s second album, was a more straight-forward approach, something of a folk rock album with its jangly guitar-driven sound. Just as with Murmur, the lyrics draw repeated listening to fathom their meaning, as with "7 Chinese Brothers" (..."Seven Chinese brothers swallowing the ocean..."), and they inspire, as with "Letter Never Sent" (..."Heaven is yours, heaven is yours, heaven is yours where I may live...". But the lyrics are more focused, some like stories, even with a little country thrown in, as in "So. Central Rain" and "Don't Go Back to Rockville," which perhaps hinted at the direction of the next album, "Fables of the Reconstruction." Stipe's delivery is still understated, not the clearly enunciated rendering that would begin with the album Document, but it's part of what ... Read More

The Drive-By Truckers are a still-thriving, though much-altered band as of this writing (October 2008). They recorded albums before and after "Southern Rock Opera" (SRO was intially released in 2001), but this release represents their creative peak and probably their ultimate artistic statement...at least, so far.

Like many so-called "concept" albums, there's not always a straight-line, A-to-B narrative path here, although there is an overall similar vibe to many songs and there are clearly reoccurring subjects and themes. Some of the many, wide-ranging topics addressed (or at least touched upon) during these 94 minutes (spread over two discs) include: Alabama politics and cultural touchstones, dead-end small town life, Southern manhood, racism, heavy drinking and drug use as youthful escapism or as a coping mechanism, swamps, fatal car crashes ... I agree with the last couple reviews - I liked the outtakes a lot! If there's an annoying trend it is the addition of bad "bonus tracks" at the end of classic reissues. For some reason I feel that I need to like them as much as the original album or I find it disappointing. Of course the outtakes are not as good as the originals, although Can't Hardly Wait (acoustic) and Kiss Me on the Bus (outtake) are pretty good considering the stylistic differences. It's way more concise than Pleased to Meet Me and about the same as Let it Be on the quality/quantity continuum.
