I am an extreme latecomer to Wilco's music; up until a couple of years ago I'd never heard of them. I became interested in so-called "numbers stations", radio stations that broadcast nothing but mysterious voices reciting strings of numbers, and somebody at work told me that a band called Wilco had used numbers stations on one of their recordings, which is how I came to listen to Wilco's 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot'. It quickly became one of my favourite CDs, and it wasn't long before I discovered this sprawling gem of an album.

'Kicking Television' has nearly everything I want from a live album; the songs are in many cases fresher, livelier and more eventful than the original versions, the playing is great, and the mood is palpably upbeat. I could wish that Jeff Tweedy had a more ... Read More

This is the best album ever. Some of his songs are short, some are long, some are sad some are funny, and sometimes he goes for as many as 18 mins in between the songs, unless you yell at him then hell just shut up and play

I have been trying to listen this album for some time but it's intolerable.

I listen to Lucinda constantly, have for years, she is a wonderful and soulful artist, I certainly dig her whole style and groove but this performance is just depressing so out of my life it goes. It really upsets me to hear her sounding so bad, it is puzzling how this performance was so bad and why it was released! We should have been spared this.

Stellar album (every pun intended). If you have to beg, borrow or steal to get to a live Neko Case show, do it. Steal the neighbor kid's lunch money if you have to. One of the best live performances I've ever seen, hands down.

Sometimes, the fates get together and slam dunk someone with a voice like Neko and throw in some great song writing skill. And, if all that wasn't enough, she just so happens to be performing with some great musicians.

This album is one of my favorites but I have to say, you can't go wrong with Fox Confessor or Blacklisted either. On this album, Hex simply stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it. A Patsy Cline strong, velvet voice; an enveloping wall-of-sound vibe. Drown in it. This is what it sounds like when your ears die and go to heaven.

2.50 out of 5 stars.

Lyrics look good on paper but, are hurt by a solid mediocre voice with a faux southern accent I could do without. The vocals could have been more like the familiar Indie-hipster-rock-nasal-geek-Muppet voices used so often in groups The lyrics and music often sound like a Yankees' interpretation of a music he (they) never really knew by not living in The South. The players know their instruments and the clichés and play them as if learned in a class. I really don't get the punk influence I heard of much. They do often sound Indie-rock. I also have not responded well to Gram Parsons. After hearing artists like Emmylou Harris, who turned out an incredible rock/country LP "The Wrecking Ball", and possibly the real first alt-country artist, Mickey Newbury, who used a large palate of beautiful ... If you are a fan of real country style music and yearn to hear great guitar backup and superb steel guitar played with genuine emotion and finesse, this is the album for you. If you do not have any other of Wayne Hancock's discs, get this one. Although it is a "compilation" album, it was recorded LIVE,at the Continetal in Austin, TX. The musicianship is outstanding as well as Wayne's genuine, in your face, delivery. This is raw Texas style country with no apologies. The LIVE setting really shows how good Wayne and his band are. It is the real deal and should be required listening for any country band members as an example as to "how it should be done".

Since Jeff (the reviewer below) is the individual who turned me on to this album in the mid 70's, I would have to agree with him 100%. This album not being available on CD was the driving force that got me to learn how to rip vinyl to WAV.
It doesn't get any better than this.

This cd is absolutely awesome! Ely is the definitive Texas Troubadour. As with most live cd's, this captures Joe's energy much better than studio recordings. All of the songs are a joy to listen to. The guitar playing (Teyo on Flamingo, Jesse Taylor on Electric & Lloyd Maines on Steel) is superb. The back of the cd words it better than I can "...Ely's powerful & offbeat mix of rock, country, folk & Tex-Mex influences never fails to invigorate & surprise an audience." I dare you to see Ely live & not have fun & come away wanting more. This is a great starter cd for new fans & a must-have for seasoned fans. Between tracks 7 & 8, we hear someone in the audience scream, "We love you Joe!!" Indeed we do.
