Ever since I read a synopsis of her life and music career in the newspaper a year ago, I was intrigued. I went to see her in a small local theater, and since then I was hooked. She mixes African and Spanish rythms with jazz and Latin beats to create an amazing sound. Her voice is captivating and penetrating. She portrays herself through her music.

Chris is to the trumpet what musak (sp.?)is to the elevator. It's not that he's not a proficient player--he is. It's that his music is so homoegenous and bland. It just drones on and on regardless of what he's playing. Too bad--he could be very creative and engaging, but not to these ears.

I like Kenny's music and this CD was not a disappointment. I've enjoyed every minute of it and would recommend it.

Finally, a great collection of Christmas music from the legendary Spyro Gyra! I do love Christmas music and personally own several hundred CD's of Christmas music. As a musician, I have a high standard of quality that I want in this type of music. This is now one of my favorites. If just for the "cool" performances of "Carol of the Bells" & "The First Noel". I really like that this disc has a nice mix of sacred and secular melodies. The gem in the collection is Jay Beckenstein's "It Won't Feel like Christmas", sung beautifully by Christine Ebersole, it should be a "new classic". No other jazz group has put out such consistantly fine music for such a long period of time (almost 30 yrs). They are the best!

On this well thought out release, David Sanborn's soulful, roots-based, and grooving Decca debut, Here & Gone, the six-time Grammy winner becomes the fourth (known to me) artist (John Scofield's That's What I Say, Maceo Parker's Roots and Grooves, and Fathead Newman's I Remember Brother Ray) to pay homage to the genius, Ray Charles. Sanborn's approach to Brother Ray is not all that apparent and obvious, as he makes deeper connections to one of his own early influences, that being Hank Crawford, who was Charles' arranger and sax-player. Some of my favorite tracks include: Marcus Miller's "Brother Ray," featuring Derek Trucks; Roy Jordan and William Weldon's "I'm Gonna Move To the Outskirts Of Town" with exceptional vocals from Clapton, where interestingly he does not get an abundance ...
