It all began in the City of Angels in 1969 when the Chicago bred producer/songwriter/vocalist/percussionist Maurice White and his brother Verdine formed an R & B group that they dubbed Salty Peppers. Less than two years later the brothers hired a new band and added lead vocalist Philip Bailey to the mix. Thus was born Earth, Wind & Fire and as they say the rest is history. Over the next 18 years the group would amass an impressive total of 32 Top 100 records. "Earth Wind & Fire: Greatest Hits" is an impressive collection of 17 of the groups biggest and best hits from this period. If you haven't heard this stuff for a while then you are in for a real treat!
Of all of the hits of Earth Wind & Fire perhaps my very favorite is the 1978 release "September". It is virtually ... Read More

This album should really get two ratings, one for the actual MJ album, and the other for the remixes.

Nothing needs to be said about Thriller. It's Thriller, and it's fantastic. Enough said.

The remixes however... are some of the worst garbage released on a major record label... ever. Fergie attempting to sing Beat It is absolutely painful. The Kanye version of Billie Jean is nothing but the original song slowed down with a sloppy beat overdubbed. I'm not even going to speak of the Akon track. Seriously, these "bonus" tracks are criminally bad. I can only assume that their presense on the album is a mistake, and they should be listened to only for comedic value.

It's sad that Stevie Wonder is best known and will be remembered by most for his ballads ala the schticky "I Just Called To Say I Loved You." This album confirms his genius and echoes strangely enough for me - The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's album. Songs like "Village Ghetto Land" reflect a storytelling aspect.

Like many artists of the seventies, Stevie was pretty progressive on this one. Some serious music here crossing a wide range of styles.

Before he was Whacko Jacko, he was a brilliant musical star, a man who revolutionized expectations of what a recording artist could do. Michael Jackson had a moment of star-crossed genius when he (along with a dream team that included Quincy Jones, among others) recorded Thriller, an album to this day is a benchmark of how pop can be both immaculate and stunning at the same time.

What happened after is stuff of legend. Michael Jackson became a man obsessed...not just the tabloid crap that dominates his legacy, but with topping his best work. The evidence here is that he often touched moments for pure brilliance ("Man in The Mirror," "Black and White") but also trapped himself into self-repetition ("Dirty Diana" aping "Beat It" and "Billie Jean"). There are also moments when Jackson's ... Read More

This is what I was looking for from Mike... It's not Thriller but it's close. If Mike didn't get weird on people then he would of out sold the Beetles by now in total volume. But, he is still one of the greatest....

Quincy Jones already rocks my world. I have nothing but respect for him and the level of musical excellence that has always surrounded anything he put his considerable mind and talent to. But this re-imagining of Handel's Messiah from an African-American perspective is exceptional, extraordinary, unabated joy--especially in "And He Shall Purify" and "Hallelujah!" I am a middle-aged white musician/pianist/voice teacher in New York City. I got my Master's at Indiana University in voice. I was raised a Southern-Baptist even! I only offer up this information to suggest what an unlikely candidate I might be to enjoy this CD. I can't stop smiling and moving with these extraordinary performances when I put this CD on. God bless Michael O. Jackson for these vocal arrangements. I bow to the unsurpassed ... Read More

I get chills when Downs re-interprets classic Mexican styles. Her voice is a wonder and I'll still be on board for her next disc. A lot of the songs here are inspired by something other than old Mother Mexico. that's fine and she shouldn't be put in a box but I'm not as interested in her take on New Orleans or rock music. Maybe you'll like it more than I did.

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today, to get through this thing called life". My personal handbook I use to get through life, is this album. Clocking in at a ballsy 45 minutes, the album takes you--whether you're ready for the ride or not--on a journey of unprecedented scale. Prince holds no punches musically or lyrically on this tour de France of an album. Head bashing riffs, toe tapp'n beats, and tear jerking melodies collide here in a musical harmonic convergence. Simply put: you can go no wrong with Purple Rain. Now go, shower in its glory.

I got this back in December, and I'm now kicking myself for not discovering her earlier albums, and I'm now in the process of buying them from Amazon. She can sing, and for the younger people reading this, you don't have to look like Beyoncé to get an album. (Sharon Jones is not ugly by any stretch of the imagination, by the way. Besides, she's a better singer than Beyoncé and most of the pretty girl singers that the Music Industry has forced on R&B/Pop/Rap and Hip Hop the last few years.) I'm eagerly awaiting her next release.

Prince has had a long and varied career as a musician. Born in 1958 to John and Matti Nelson, his career started in 1977 with the release of his first album "For You". Going through groups like The Revolution and The New Power Generation, his musical style changed somewhat through the years ranging from Funk, R&B, Soul, to Pop, Hip Hop and even Jazz, Psychadelic & Hard Rock. This album, The Very Best of Prince, gives you seventeen of his very best tunes for you to listen to. Gems from his early career like "I Wanna Be Your Lover", "1999" & "Little Red Corvette" are there as well as tunes from his movies Purple Rain and Graffiti Bridge. Eve onto more recent tunes like "Gett Off", "Cream" "Diamonds and Pearls" & "Money Don't Matter 2 Night". While the album itself is a testament to his career, there ... Read More
