Funky, Funky, Funky. These brothers are on another level. I see bands all around NYC and around the world trying to play Cissy Strut. It's scary how humble beginnings can foster into such great funk. The drummer, Joseph Ziggy Modeliste is funky beyond recognition. The Meters are in the same catagory as James Brown's JBs.

It's a shame one of the greatest (funk) bands of all time doesn't get nearly the amount of attention they deserve. I first heard them in middle school from my brother and immediately liked them. Now that I've gotten a little older and enjoy music much more I realized it was a disservice not to own at least one album by The Meters. I remembered this was the album my bro had, and I loved it, so I had to buy it. Although there are a few not-so-good songs, there are many more fantastic songs throughout that more than make up for the others. Get ready to be funked!

Trying to stretch my musical tastes, and liking jazz on the whole, I tried this group and this CD, as Amazon selected this an essential recording....

I wouldn't have labelled it so. Going to resell this soon. No matter how many listens, I am unimpressed.

I like music, meaning chord structures that permit melody, sensible counterpoint, and harmonies however abstract...but this effort is generally lacking. To me its a little like Pat Metheny's "The Way Up" (which I own and listen to very occasionally)...someone might appreciate it for what it tries to do (stretch the concepts of music and jazz) and for the occasional tunefulness, but its not a "must listen".

I wonder if Martin, Medeski or Wood have any Frank Zappa albums. If not, they could learn a little about jazz ... Read More

4.Artifact by: Sound Tribe Sector 9
February 08, 2005
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Artifact
In Brief: More approachable than other STS9. Yet, this album is not for most people. For the rest, highly recommended.

I purchased Artifact after hearing the song "Tokyo" on Pandora. I was stunned when I heard this song. I am familiar with STS9 from their album "Live at Home." After hearing that album, I was of the opinion that STS9 were experts at creating strings of unique sounds and calling them songs. "Tokyo" is an exhilarating song. It is full of deep, grimy bass that (amazingly) seems to speak to you at points. "Tokyo" proves that STS9 knows how to write a melody. Unfortunately, they don't always choose to do so.
I'm an advocate of always listening to an album from beginning to end in its entirety, but unless you are an experienced IDM/Glitch/Ambient Electronica advocate, I ... Read More

Simply stated -- this is their album that best balances depth and accessibility. Incredible grooves (as always) and a great variety of sounds make it the album I most often turn to when I'm in the mood for some MMW. You just gotta love when the drums come in on "House Mop"....

This is truly FUNKY jazz music. It's raw, but it's tight! It's in your face, but has a subtle element that's truly sexy. This is party music for everybody of every age, sex, race, creed, and color.

I was looking at CDs on Amazon of various genres of music. I stumbled upon Galactic-never heard of them before. After listening to samples, I was really impressed. The CD arrived yesterday and I've been jamming to it since. A very creative mix of funk/jazz/rock/and who knows what else. Some albums have songs that sound the same. Not this one. You want a variety, you've got it. Some songs are smoother and more jazz oriented. And others have that gritty acid rock sound. Some sound like the '70's and others sound more modern. A warning-Galactic seems to be a band that goes through changes rapidly. The samples reveal that each album has a different sound to it. If you like one of theirs, don't buy another without sampling the tracks. I may get Cooling Off, but probably not any of their other albums.

The Meters' Josie material is unequivocally seminal and classic, and along with others I have discussed that music on this site. The transition to the second stage of their decade-plus career roughly coincides with the integration of vocals and their 1972 contract with Reprise Records. Actually they had been adding vocals to their recordings since 1970's "Struttin'" on Josie and the last few (1970-71) Josie singles collected on "Zony Mash", which also feature the introduction of Cyril Neville's congas.
"Cabbage Alley" was an impressive deut for Reprise, with layered percussion, influences ranging from "Riot"-era Sly Stone, various strains of contemporary rock, and early Funkadelic, even studio experimentation that leads to "Stay Away" sounding not unlike early psychedelic dub. The differences on the followup "Rejuvenation" ... Read More

I love this album. I really can't get enough of their beats. Not as experimental as their past albums, it gets back to the sounds that made the trio famous. They constantly keep it fresh.

All these comments here have made my day. It's a joy to read how much the Meters' music has influenced so many people just like me. While I have yet to buy each individual Meters album, I have been listening to the "Funkify Your Life" box set for years and it has definitely changed the way I think about and play music. While I'll never be able to play drums the way Zig does, I can only hope that some of his funk and soul have influenced my playing and have helped me move away from the Neil Peart influences I grew up on (love ya' Neil but I gotta grow up sometime!). I only wish I'd grown up in New Orleans so I could have seen brilliant musicians like the Meters when they were in their prime.

I've also been checking out "Sneaking Sally Through the Alley" where the Meters back up Robert Palmer. One of the great records of all ... Read More
