You know that pivotal scene in "Garden State" where Natalie Portman's character shows Zach Braff's character a song by The Shins? She says, "You gotta hear this one song, it'll change your life I swear," and it literally does set into motion a chain of events that changes his life completely. That is exactly how I feel about The Postal Service's Give Up, an album that changed my life and my perception of what good music is, and what it could be.

If you've read my musings before, you're undoubtedly aware of the story of how I first heard this album. Driving with a friend during Spring Break 2004 (whoo!), he puts in this CD and begins plaing "Nothing Better." Jimmy Tamborello's bellish synth sound reminds me of when Mario collects a coin, and being the huge video game nerd that I ... Read More

This Scottish electronic duo rightfully stuck out amidst their more generic trance or mild idm cohorts with unique synths and unpredictable beat patterns, but in retrospect certainly did not live up to all the praise has suggested. Their signature style includes warm yet gently menacing keyboards, juxtaposing the innocence of youth with something far more sinister to a satisfying effect. But after admiring the aesthetic, it becomes all too apparent that some of these vacant, methodical exercises are too sterile for their own good. Compositionally, MHTRTC is mired in a redundancy that articulates sluggishness, though there are many exceptions where finely tuned subtle production saves listeners from ear-apathy.

The dark ambient sounds layered in light beat makes the music infinately enjoyable. Tons of rythmic tones and cords to pick apart and enjoy from every song, over and over again.

I've been belaying this review for a long time. Since the album has been around for six years, I'm already late, but I've only been listening to it for three, so I'm only half as late as some.

I've read some of the lowest rated reviews, and some of them have good points: "This is not Music Has a Right to Children," "It's weird," "It's evil," and "It's garbage." Respectively, my opinion on those four matters are as follows; yes, sometimes, wrong, and that's your opinion.

For those of you expecting the flutey melody lines of Music Has a Right to Children, expect to be surprised. Or disappointed. Whichever you choose. Boards of Canada has yet to duplicate the same techniques in a subsequent album (since the release of The Campfire Headphase, this is almost an understatement). ... Read More

I've been listening to the new Boards of Canada album, and while I love it, my feelings and thoughts are somewhat mixed.
While on many levels, it's their strongest work to date - breaking out of the more artificial background of groundbreaking electronica that was their first and previous albums, the guitar/acoustic-based approach to IDM is truly the absolute best possible direction they could have contemplated going-
at a time when many, like myself, grow to resent the somewhat hollow artifice of many electronic artists (bola, for example- while wonderful, I do crave a bit of organic material mixed in with the beats and loops), BOC are taking their art to the next level-
and in doing so have connected themselves and the listener back with some strong roots in 'music' rather than 'IDM music', per ... Read More

This is, undoubtedly, the best electronica album of all time. I Love this album. All of the songs. Period. From someone who has been in the music industry professionally, I have heard lots of music. And when it come to Aphex Twin, and any other in this genre, it ROCKS.

As indicated by the running times above, this album is relatively brief, such that it could almost be considered an EP -- the best stuff is found when Aphex Twin mixes frenetic beats with lush melodies. The paragon of that is "Girl/Boy Song", fusing pizzicato strings with crisp, yet at-times sloppy drumwork. Snares flail and assail as the string bite back, harmonic development pulling you in deeper (as opposed to the same thing repeating over and over, which is a common failing with this kind of experimental music).

"4" has a delightful, Oriental steppishness to it, with an overall mood that sounds fast and slow at the same time -- RDJ, when he gets it right, is a temporal master of controlling mood through precise sound selection and arrangement.

"Fingerbib" is another of my faves, its near ... Read More

I got this cd upon reading reviews here on Amazon and being a fan of much of what BOC has done in the past. It seemed like just a small risk but boy did it pay off. I agree with what most of the posters have said of this album an its certainly a crucial offering if you're a fan or even a beginner wanting to try them out but not a take a full leap into a whole album. The first 3 songs are magnificent, each one being incredibly relaxed and repetetive but never boring. Its amazing how tracks that seem so simple can draw you in and hold on so tightly throughout the songs. The only negative is the 4th track which is why I can't give it the full 5 stars. I just found that one uninspired. BUT, the other tracks are some of the best they've ever released.
