My parents were teenagers/young adults in Philadelphia during the 60's and early 70's. I grew up with my parents playing this music. It was just part of our environment. My brother and I were babies singing along with this awesome music. I'm in my early 40s now and heard an NPR Fresh Air interview with Gamble and Huff yesterday. Those guys are just so talented. AWHHHHHHHHH, hearing that music again brought me such joy. Learning about the genius of Gamble and Huff and all of the songs that they've written and produced, just made me profoundly proud of them and the city of Philadelphia; a place I left in the 80's. Quincy Jones already rocks my world. I have nothing but respect for him and the level of musical excellence that has always surrounded anything he put his considerable mind and talent to. But this re-imagining of Handel's Messiah from an African-American perspective is exceptional, extraordinary, unabated joy--especially in "And He Shall Purify" and "Hallelujah!" I am a middle-aged white musician/pianist/voice teacher in New York City. I got my Master's at Indiana University in voice. I was raised a Southern-Baptist even! I only offer up this information to suggest what an unlikely candidate I might be to enjoy this CD. I can't stop smiling and moving with these extraordinary performances when I put this CD on. Yep. Volume 11A. Motown had so many singles in 1971 that these 5 discs only represent January to June 1971. And there are 119 tracks ! Man , this series is unbeatable! We are now at 60 discs in the series ; 71 hours , 17 minutes and 21 seconds ; and 1517 songs !! Fact is , there will be a 12A & B for the final Detroit era years represented in the series as well : 1972. That will bring the total to 14 boxed sets. And the whole series is scheduled to be done in 2009 for Mighty Motown's 50TH ! These things are all limited editions , and sold-out editions are commanding high prices already. JULY 2008 REVIEW: I purchased this particular box set a little over a month ago, and I must say: it does NOT disappoint. You really can't complain; although the box set was released several years ago, and therefore the early 1990's CD mastering here isn't necessarily as strong and powerful sounding as a 2008 mastering might be, the tracks presented here are bright and clear. Approximately 100 tracks fill out this 4-CD box set, and most of the songs are winners. And they are presented here in their original mono sound mixes as originally released (an apparent problem for some reviewers here, but I had no issue with it; the songs sound the same as they always have). There's a great selection of tunes, but they sound the same as they did on the radio 40 years ago. I fiddled with my stereo's tuners to make sure they were set properly, but couldn't get a crisp, clean sound.

I echo the sentiments of the previous reviewer, and too, give this set 10 stars. Heck, 15... 20... it's that good!! Any meager words I come up with cannot do any justice to what's contained in this handsome package, so you'll just have to get your own copy. Ace has really outdone themselves with this one: from the booklet-styled holder to the notes and photos to the music itself... I am rendered mute!! Guys, it's gonna be hard to match this one, but a second volume wouldn't be too much to ask for please, would it??This set is by far my favorite box set released this year, and as anyone who has read any of my posts or reviews before knows, I am wallowing in box sets!! Get this now!! What are you waiting for??

A very close friend gave me this CD when I was going thru a terrible breakup. I listened to the CD so much I wore it out. But with the help of the CD, my good friend, and the passing of time somehow or another I managed to survive. Fast forward years later, a different yet equally close friend of mine is going thru a divorce and, yes, you guessed it, I'm on Amazon today purchasing the CD for her. I don't know what it is, but this CD is empowering. Makes you cry, makes you angry, makes you want to dance, and makes you dare to dream again. It's a great CD and even better medicine.
