While I totally understand that the first Metal Massacre compilation is most noteworthy for featuring the earliest recorded work by Metallica, I'm a bit surprised that no one has mentioned the album's role in launching another heavy metal institution - namely Metal Blade Records.

Put together on a shoestring budget, Metal Massacre I was for the emerging West Coast metal scene what Metal for Muthas, Vol. 1 was for the NWOBHM scene, an early showcase of a handful of dedicated and talented bands that were changing the musical landscape. Now you can debate the lasting impact of bands like Pandemonium and Avatar, but the West Coast scene had a huge impact on the overall heavy metal sound, and bands like Malice, Black `n Blue, and of course Metallica were at the forefront of that scene. ... ....I really liked a lot of the songs on here in their acoustic form. This album definitely brought back memories of my childhood. I would never listen to the original version of these songs now as they are probably too loud for an old guy like me. I will say, however, that in their acoustic form, I liked a lot of these songs and, as I said they brough back a lot of memories. It was also fun to share some of these old songs with friends I grew up with.

I heard the Nativity in Black part 2 , and except for Slayer , Megadeth , Pantera & Primus which are the best covers on this edition ,the rest of the tracklist (well System of a Down & Busta Rhymes renditions are ok)didn't do much. I prefer the first edition instead.

The second Metal Massacre compilation didn't introduce a legendary band like Metallica (Metal Massacre, Vol. 1) or Slayer (Metal Massacre, Vol. 3), but it still unleashed a wave of impressive artists from the developing California metal scene.

The biggest names featured on Metal Massacre II are Armored Saint and Overkill, both of which are (more or less) active to this day. The compilation also introduced cult metal favorites Obsession, Savage Grace and Warlord. The rest of the artists featured here either had one-album careers (3rd Stage Alert, Trauma, Hyksos) or never released an album at all (Surgical Steel, Dietrich, Molten Leather, Aloha). Trauma, of course, was Cliff Burton's pre-Metallica band and Aloha (later Hawaii) featured Marty Friedman, pre-Megadeth.

It's not the game changer that Metal ... Read More

This is a nice blend of music, keeping it on the heavy side for the most part. You don't have to see the movie to like the soundtrack, although I did. You have some Pantera, you have some Filter, some Megadeth and some Rollins Band, and more. Happy to have it in my collection.

Back in the late 90's they promoted this album ALL THE TIME while I was watching WWE wrestling (called WWF back then). It eventually got to the point where I simply HAD to buy the thing to see what the big deal was.

Unfortunately, while it was really appealing to me at first, it really began to lose its charm as the years past, as I began to find out the hit songs weren't the ONLY things these bands should be remembered for. In fact, these songs seriously aren't as good as many of the songs you'd find on any one of the Ratt, Quiet Riot, or Poison albums. Why should we remember *just* the hits? We shouldn't.

Furthermore, artists like Alice Cooper and Judas Priest shouldn't be on here in the first place, because they're mostly early to mid 70's rock artists, and this collection of tracks should ... Read More

So why did I buy it then? Simply because during watching the absolutely brilliant film, one song stuck out. The fabulous version of Patsy Cline's "Crazy", by the Kidney Thieves, which was already a cover. This is a classic song, and the Kidney Thieves manage to put a new spin on it, with a husky voiced female, and a slow beginning, then it becomes really rocky towards the middle. This has always been a favourite song of mine, but now it's even better, so I've been playing it almost constantly. It really matches my mood at the moment too, and the lyrics are so appropriate for me right now. Just watch out when you play it, don't turn it up too loud to hear the beginning, cos believe me you'll be racing to turn it down when it hits the rocky middle.

The rest of the music, is so not my kinda thing. For heavens sake, Motorhead ... Read More
