After listening to a representative sample, I would argue this set is a bargain at 3 times the price:

Yes the recordings are much as Bach would have wanted them performed. Its as if you could enter a time capsule and arrive at the Thomaskirche just in time for the Sunday Mass. Most of the comments below about the sound or performance quality of this collection are due to this and not to production or recording standards which are high throughout.

The 17 discs of organ works alone are more than worth the price of admission. As a whole they could possibly be the best collection available today at any price. The vocal works are authentic to the era with modest ensembles that evoke the spirit of the lectionary or civic event. All Keyboarding is per harpsichord and wind ... Read More

I wasn't as over-joyed with this CD as I expected to be. I bought it after hearing the title track on FM radio. The title track is, indeed, a jewel; the rest is, in my view, only high-grade "background" music. The pianist is a marvel (and a beauty, too!) - her popularity is easily understandable. She possesses a remarkable gift for transposing and transcribing classic keyboard to "swing" keyboard. Many Bach purists (this one, for example) don't appreciate that, even though we have to admit that a lot of Bach swings, anyway, without transcribing. Lsten to tracks 3 and 4 and you will get your money's worth - they're worth the price.

With Argerich you simply cannot go wrong in the world of piano.
There is so much passion, near recklessness and sheer power to rival even Liszt himself.
The Scherzo is so clean and maintains an unmatched pace throughout - yet be not deceived as some uncredibly sweet moments will catch you unaware.
The Toccata is truly devilish and one cannot comprehend how a human could reach such a tempo and yet hit all the required notes!!
The Jeux d'eau makes one wonder who might posesse all these pianistic abilities; from dreamy images to listless moments where languor is at hand, from the most fluid and yes, watery splashes to crystal clear melodies!
Finally, if for no other reason, you must have this Liszt Sonata! I have never heard any pianist come close to this playing, none maintains ... Read More

I come to this review with great heart-felt enthusiasm to nudge you a little to purchase this Stirring Album to feed your inner soul that is hungering for deeply moving music for trumpet and organ.

I purchased this album years ago, now, but do, in truth, come back to it very often for the soul stirring that only the trumpet can give you. While I (and probably many) normally do not think about the trumpet (or brass at all, for that matter) very much, it is, truly, lovely, filling sound that stirs one like no other type of instrument(s).

Soundwise, there is NO DOUBT that this fabulous disc is DEMONSTRATION-Quality...put it on your system and turn it up, and you will certainly agree with me on this point. And the acoustic is simply stunning...you'll see!

While this entire album ... Read More

Horowitz Live and Unedited [includes Bonus DVD]
The sound is simply astonishing, as if it were recorded on 21st century equipment instead of forty years ago. If you enjoy classical piano, this is an essential for your collection. Horowitz at his best.

Not much to say, fine performances and a nice balance of traditional liturgical music styles. I particularly enjoyed the thrilling choral arrangement of Veni Veni Emmanuel. Be warned that, while they probably did their best with the miking and recording, it will sound muddy and overly reverberant to some ears.

Soon it will be the time for shops to be setting out their Christmas items, for while Christmas comes but once a year, in fact people are working toward it all year long. The same is true for composers and musical performers. I found it amusing to learn that this particular CD of Christmas-related organ music was performed in August of 1995; of course, to be prepared in time for the holiday season, it had to be done ahead of time. Not quite Christmas in July, but close!

This music was performed over the two days in August by Kevin Bower, at the organ in Chichester Cathedral in the United Kingdom. This is straight organ performing - no back choir or orchestral accompaniment. Bower is a nimble and spirited player, with a good sense of holiday mood for the pieces.

Some of the pieces are very ... Read More

It's my favorite Schumann Cd. I Love the way Ritcher played the works. Maybe the best played Waldszenen ever, but it's in mono. Rest of the Cd is in Stereo. So the sound is not at top at today standar. A Norwegian classical music lovers. So there you have my opinion for my point to this recordings. Very enjoyable. Recommend it strongly for all Richters fans. A must have!

Dietrich Buxtehude was but one of a long and distinguished line of Dutch, Danish and German organists/composers beginning with Conrad Paumann in the fifteenth century and ending with the death of J S Bach and the Barok epoch some three hundred years later. In the company of Sweelinck, Bruhns, Muffat, Reinken et al, he was a luminary; but it is as mentor and inspirer of Bach that his place in history has been elevated above that of the others.

Musically, he was very inventive but seemed to have a rather short attention span so that the potential of much of his thematic material remained undeveloped. It was in the hands of Bach (who "borrowed" a surprising amount of Buxtehude's writing - a common enough practice at the time) that the seeds germinated to become the zenith of Barok (and subsequent) organ composition. ...
