At less than $30, this has to be one of the greatest bargains currently out there. For many lovers of Chopin and piano playing, Rubinstein's late 1950s/early 1960s RCA survey is the Bible. Undoubtedly, it contains some godly Chopin playing. However, there is too much unevenness and lack of drama for this cycle to live up to its reference status. Indeed, this is a Chopin Collection and not a complete survey, missing the Etudes, Rondos, Variations, early Polonaises, First Sonata, concert fantasies, chamber music as well as some miscellaneous pieces--most notably the Op post Nocturnes, Mazurkas, Waltzes and Prelude, plus the Op 45 Prelude and Allegro de concert. I really like this CD. The music was very uplifting and soothing at the same time...I play it for my fetal son every night before bed with headphones that I stick onto my belly. I don't know if it's doing anything, but I can hear it too and it almost puts me to sleep :)

You simply cannot go wrong with this wonderful collection from a disciplined and masterfully-led chorus. If you want to hear Christmas choral standards in all their glory, no disappointment here - beautiful men's chorus version (original) of Beibl's Ave Maria, and the treble voices also get play in the Ceremony of Carols.

Noel---Christmas at King's has become the de facto standard of carols at our house. It really is an excellent collection of Christmas carols. In fact, the only real blemish on this album is that there is discernible noise in some tracks: I had to examine the CD when I first heard them, and realized the recordings on these discs are more than forty years old: they were recorded from 1959 to 1965. But venerable recording technology and associated sound artifacts aside, this album is a collection of superb renditions of classic Christmas carols. It's an absolutely delightful CD! The music is soothing and beautiful, the singing is so lovely and angelic. The lyrics are so beautiful that it brings me tears. `how do you write down a baby's first cry...' `what can I give poor as I am, ...'

This is a most wonderful collection of some of the most beautiful pieces of music to listen to when you want to hear something soothing and relaxing. The piano is much in evidence as you might expect from anything by Chopin and it is played flawlessly and flowingly here. Quite simply, music to calm your mind. If you like peaceful and beautiful poetic sounding music, you can't go wrong with this one. It is marketed as a CD to play when you are involved in some romantic interlude, but it by no means needs to be reserved for only that kind of scenario. This is to be enjoyed anytime you want to wind down and relax, maybe even to meditate to as there are no jarring elements that could come in and interfere with your reverie. The music just flows effortlessly along. Truly, a treasure!

I know that many reviewers find this to be one of the greatest piano discs ever recorded, so I hope that readers will be open to a contrary and somewhat heretical point of view. I never heard these pieces until I bought this CD. They are basically nice salon pieces: charming, melodic, lightweight. I notice that several reviewers have pointed out that Gilels does not play up the sentimentality in these pieces. Perhaps that's what I find lacking in these performances. I guess I am saying that I would prefer to hear frankly sentimental compositions such as these played with a great deal more sentiment.
