At less than $30, this has to be one of the greatest bargains currently out there. For many lovers of Chopin and piano playing, Rubinstein's late 1950s/early 1960s RCA survey is the Bible. Undoubtedly, it contains some godly Chopin playing. However, there is too much unevenness and lack of drama for this cycle to live up to its reference status.

Indeed, this is a Chopin Collection and not a complete survey, missing the Etudes, Rondos, Variations, early Polonaises, First Sonata, concert fantasies, chamber music as well as some miscellaneous pieces--most notably the Op post Nocturnes, Mazurkas, Waltzes and Prelude, plus the Op 45 Prelude and Allegro de concert. In contrast to the Ashkenazy set, this collection includes the two Concertos.

Particularly Rubinstein's Waltzes, ... Read More

This is a masterful performance by the great Vladimir Ashkenazy of Chopin's favourite piano works. If you love Chopin's music and Ashkenazy's magic touch, this 2-disc CD is a must. Apart from all the all-time favourites such as grande valse brillante, op 18, nocturne in E flat major, op 9 no 2, Minute, Black Key, Military, Raindrop, Tristesse etc etc, it's interesting to note Ashkenazy's interpretation of Ballade in G minor, op 23 vis-a-vis Janusz Olejniczak playing it in the poignant scene of the award-winning Polanski's film "The Pianist" ie the piece played by Adrien Brody in his role as Szpilman, the Jewish pianist in hiding, to the German officer Hosenfeld. Enjoy!!

What can one say about Pollini at this point? Once again he delivers careful, intelligent performances that somehow come across as impersonal and unpoetic. The "meaning" of a piece of music may be a subjective matter, but the issue does not seem to have crossed his mind. One suspects that he (and fellow modernists like Boulez) might be derisive of the whole idea.

But the real problem with this recording is the sound engineering - distant and shallow, seriously lacking in bass response. As a master of the instrument, Pollini deserves better.

Upon first listen, you might think that "Codex Faenza: Instrumental Music of the Early 15th Century" is wrongly named. These works were composed by 14th Century composers, such as Machaut and Landini, and several songs appear as vocal arrangements without instrumentation.

That's where the "Codex Faenza" comes in. This tome was an early 15th century book of instrumental arrangements of 14th century music. The Unicorn Ensemble performs several works from the Codex Faenza, sometimes preceding the instrumental version with the original vocal arrangement for comparison. The last two tracks, the anonymous compositions "Kyrie" and "Ave maris stella," feature alternating sections of plainchant and organ music.

In many cases, the busy melodies gain something in the translation. The top ... Read More

I was hoping to find some nice calming, relaxing music to play in my classroom and home. This was a little too instrumentally loud.

I know that many reviewers find this to be one of the greatest piano discs ever recorded, so I hope that readers will be open to a contrary and somewhat heretical point of view.

I never heard these pieces until I bought this CD. They are basically nice salon pieces: charming, melodic, lightweight. I notice that several reviewers have pointed out that Gilels does not play up the sentimentality in these pieces. Perhaps that's what I find lacking in these performances. I guess I am saying that I would prefer to hear frankly sentimental compositions such as these played with a great deal more sentiment.

Please be aware of the very real possibility that you will find this music boring. The music has grown on me over a period of several months of frequent listening, but I prefer to listen ... Read More

The sound is simply astonishing, as if it were recorded on 21st century equipment instead of forty years ago. If you enjoy classical piano, this is an essential for your collection. Horowitz at his best.

I bought this CD to play while I am putting my infant son to bed. Every night I give him his bottle, read him a story and like to have soothing music playing in the background. This was a great choice! It makes for a great alternative to lullaby CD's. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a nice relaxing blend of classical music.

Let me state upfront that I did not buy this set as such. I received it as a gift when I recently made a pledge to my local classical music station (WGUC here in Cincinnati) during their pledge drive. Imagine my good fortune, and surprise, when this arrievd at my house!

"Harmonia Mundi 50" (29 CDs, plus 1 CD-Rom; about 36 hours of music) is so massive and overwhelming that I will admist I haven't yet listened to every single piece of music yet. I have been picking out and listening to CDs that immediately appealed to me, either because of the composer, or the orchestra/artist playing it, or the venue where it was recorded (there are several CDs that have a Belgian connection, and I am from Belgium originally). But rest assured, I will make my way through all of the other CDs as well, as I am intruiged to discover what else ... Read More
