This acapella group is very talented and has an interesting history. Their holiday song selections are good - some original and some traditional. The arrangements are also good and it's sometimes hard to believe that there are no musical instruments - their voices are the only instruments. Enjoyed this CD very much!

Quincy Jones already rocks my world. I have nothing but respect for him and the level of musical excellence that has always surrounded anything he put his considerable mind and talent to. But this re-imagining of Handel's Messiah from an African-American perspective is exceptional, extraordinary, unabated joy--especially in "And He Shall Purify" and "Hallelujah!" I am a middle-aged white musician/pianist/voice teacher in New York City. I got my Master's at Indiana University in voice. I was raised a Southern-Baptist even! I only offer up this information to suggest what an unlikely candidate I might be to enjoy this CD. I can't stop smiling and moving with these extraordinary performances when I put this CD on. God bless Michael O. Jackson for these vocal arrangements. I bow to the unsurpassed ... Read More

4.He is Christmas by: Take 6

Music : He is Christmas
This is, in my opinion, the greatest Christmas album ever! I've had it for 7 years now and NEVER tire of it. The arrangements are bold and brilliantly inventive. Their harmonies are as fresh as ever, and I know this music will endure and excite throughout my honkey life. My fav is Drummer Boy. I have all their stuff, and this and So Much 2 Say are my favs. Their other Christmas CD might appeal to more mainstream listeners, whereas this feeds the ears/sensibilities of those wanting excitement - wanting the proverbial chills-up-spine thrills. The cover design appropriately reflects this.

Pure and silky smooth. What I like about this particular xmas cd is how organic it sounds to me. It's untainted by all the trappings of 'modern' tunage. The vocals are tight and one can focus on the lyrics and imagine sitting next to some massively burning yule log drinking strong nog and simply enjoying fine music.

I first encountered Sweet Honey and the Rock in 2003 at Michigan Wymns Music Festival. They were fantastic. Recently, one of my chorus mates suggested the track I Remeber, I Believe as something we should sing in our spring concert. Our director agreed and I couldn't be more trilled. I purchased two copies of the CD, one for myself and one for the daughter of a friend of mine. It is a permanent part of my car audio collection. Try Sweet Honey out and you'll fall in love with their five part harmonies, their personal touch, and the sweet voices of a wonderful, soulful group of wymn.

I listended to a snipet of this cd on Amazon, 'A Quiet Place'.
Sometimes those samples don't give you the complete picture.
In other words you need more than two seconds to judge a song.
I did'nt care for this cd as a whole. It sounds dated, though
I am a big fan of Take 6. I especially like their sessions with
Stevie Wonder, but this cd comes across as just another one of
thoses Boy Bands from the 80s and 90s.

My introduction to The Roches was an article in the local paper; intrigued I checked them out on Amazon.com and heard enough to want more. This CD is an outstanding choice to represent them in your collection. The nineteen tracks not only span their carrier but also contain some of their best work.

This is Folk and/or Harmony and/or comedy and/or serious music. I am not sure if it is one or all of the above. I know in a world of cookie cutter sounds, this group is unique and real fun. The Hallelujah Chorus needs to be heard to be appreciated; it is a centerpiece and a great one. However, this track is not the "normal sound". Mr. Sellack, Hammond Song seems to be their sound. Until they change for The Troubles, which is another sound altogether. My point being that this is an interesting ... Read More

Chanticleer is an incredibly musical and blended clear-tone vocal group that performs each piece on the album with perfection and insightful musicianship. Overall, the album is very peaceful and perfect for getting your head and spirit out of the chaos of the Christmas season and really brings your focus back to the beauty of the Christmas. All of the arrangements are beautiful, and my favorite is Hugo Distler's variations on "Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming" (in German, Es ist ein Ros entsprungen). The close and weaving harmonies make this piece and others songs you want to listen closely to, and not just have them playing in the background of your Christmas party.

I first heard this group on the Ellen D show. I am a dance teacher and the song they sang had me tapping my feet instantaneously! I had to have that cd. And the boys did not disappoint. The thing I find most amazing is how they use their voices as the various instruments while singing. It is truly impressive. It's like Bobby McFarrin on steroids. I highly recommend this cd if you like Bobby McFarrin, and Soul with a little Pop/Rap. If you are a dance teacher, I use it for a Jazz warm-up and have gotten several Tap combos from it.
