Don't play this in an elevator; don't play this while you make dinner; don't play this on a Sunday afternoon while you read; don't play this while you watch tv; don't play this while you put away the clothes; don't play this in your car; don't play this while you're getting ready for work in the morning or going to bed at night; don't play this while you're having a conversation with a friend on the phone whom you haven't seen in three years. Play this when you are ready to stop and listen. Don't even think. If you are able to listen and lose thought, you'll enjoy this music.

if you're looking for music that sounds like a soundtrack for a movie you'll forget in 5 minutes, buy this disc. this music is really bad. at one point a violin line sounds like a vivaldi rip off, and you know what stravinsky said about vivaldi: "vivaldi was a very boring man who wrote the same concerto over and over." in a nutshell, glass's compositions sound like a second year piano student playing appegiated triads over and over and over and over............

Unlike virtually every other Glass composition to which I have been exposed, "Songs and Poems" displayed real intellectualism and honesty of a kind I have never expected from the man who produced (and continuously re-produced) "Glassworks." These compositions, while recognizably minimalist in style and form, are unusually jagged-edged and stormy--romantic, I would say, in a way very unlike Glass' usual treacle and posturing.

Sutter's command of the material really elevates and justifies its emotional content. I would have never expected it, but these pieces are not only emotionally convincing, but convincing in a gripping and agonized fashion which reflects impressively on the soloist. She is both restrained and emphatic; for the first and only time in Glass' body of work I think we ... Read More

Just to clarify from the previous review, this set collects the 3 cds of Philip Glass's music currently on the Naxos label. The fourth bonus cd is the Sonic Rebellion release, which is a compilation of pieces by twentieth century composers such as John Cage, Penderecki, Ligeti, etc. The performances on this set are all very good, and they show some of Glass's strongest compositions. If you are also interested in the disc of 20th century music, or think this would be cheaper than buying the 3 Naxos releases individually, then it makes a worthwhile purchase.

Philip Glass and librettist Christopher Hampton have adapted J. M. Coetzee's parable about power and inhumanity in an opera that staggers in both dramatic power and beauty. The story is set in a town on the fringes of a nameless Empire that is in the process of expanding over the lands of wandering peoples called The Barbarians. As settlers encroach on grazing lands, the Barbarians are led to raid a few cattle, the same solution that Native Americans were forced into as European settlers forged westward. The Empire's response is very contemporary, however, fabricating a threat and confirming it through "confessions" made under torture. As the army takes over and terrorizes the town, its inhabitants are fanned into a frenzy of fear that allows them to accept militarization as normal and necessary. The ... Read More

I bought this CD on a whim when I bought David Byrne's Knee Plays. However, who could resist a Glass of Rumi? I would love to see the Robert Wilson it goes with, but I dearly love the music and the words.

This is the original version of Philip Glass's magnum opus (well, one of many magnum opuses) Music in Twelve Parts. He has since re-recorded it, and this old version is out of print. I personally prefer this version. While it may not be as technically proficient as the latter version, it's rawer (as raw as Glass can be) and more human than the latter version. It's an epic work, one piece in twelve parts, with every part running on average 15 minutes, usually longer. It is not a slight undertaking to listen to it. It's a committment, like watching a Tarkovsky film, watching Bela Tarr's Satantango, watching Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplatz, reading Tolstoy's War and Peace or watching a performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion. All of Glass's work is like that, but his early stuff (and his operas) require ... Read More

Four weeks ago, my Music Theory teacher explained to the class that each of us were to do a short report on a classical composer of the twentieth century. I immediately called Arvo Pärt. Nothing else could have competed. I spent a weekend listening to his music and researching him at my local library. That weekend, I had a visit to Borders and by chance stumbled upon this box set. I walked out of the store having purchased it for approximately $32.

Why it took until 2008 for such a box set to be released is beyond me. How I got away with buying it for $32 is also beyond me.

I can say with great confidence that Arvo Pärt is my favorite composer, although I am probably not alone these days. In a world where classical music is becoming increasingly fashionable for the hip crowd, Pärt reigns supreme with ... Read More
