Was delightfully suprised by this album. I've always admired both men, but the two of them together brings back a feeling to music that has been missing.

In my opinion, this is one of the best classical Christmas albums. It's not only for classical music fans. It features familiar classical songs as well as hymns and secular Christmas songs. In other words, it's easy on the ear for those who are not usual fans of high pitched soprano sounds.

I first encountered this on cassette, quite by accident. It later became the background for my work at morning at the easel painting watercolours. But this is no wallpaper music. The technical genius of matching separate recordings of different trumpet parts is surpassed only by Marsalis's bright and lively technique. The masters would be pleased. As for the watercolours, I can now stand before them and see the music's influence on paper. Well worth the listening...

Wynton Marsalis at his best. One lovely piece after another. A wonderful collection!

It's easy to think that the culture is in decline (mostly because it is), but Wynton is proof that we are not done for yet. He is the real thing, whether you like classical or jazz or whatever. He is a master. I love this recording of some very familiar pieces, recorded here by a real virtuoso. Just as we were getting used to mediocrity, Wynton comes along and reminds us all that perfection is worth pursuing despite our teachers' insistence that we can feel good about ourselves no matter what we do. Here is the personification of artistry and the claim that greatness is worth pursuing and is achievable.

A two star reviewer complained that this CD is not for the purist! Fair enough. Wynton Marsalis is one of the leading jazz trumpeters over the last 30 years and has far more jazz material released than classical. If we can tolerate Benny Goodman playing Mozart Clarinet Concertos, we should be able to cut Mr. Marsalis some slack too! This CD showcases the playing of Marsalis and his take on some of the great Baroque classics. It is not meant to be a pure as snow period instrument performance! If it is not pure enough for you, just think of it as being in the style of Baroque and relax a little and enjoy the music. There is much to be enjoyed from track one until the end of this great CD! I have enjoyed Marsalis' playing all the way back to a CBS Masterworks vinyl LP from about 1980 and he is one of those artists ... Read More

"Joe Cool's Blues" was released in 1995 on Columbia Records and is the second album to feature Ellis Marsalis, the first being "Standard Time, Vol. 3: The Resolution Of Romance," which is an excellent recording, see my review.

The focus of this music is on Charlie Brown. I'm sure why he made this album, but I'm glad he did, because it has some excellent materal on it. My favorite being "Buggy Ride." Listen to Wynton's Dizzy Gillespie style mute solo, it's amazing in it's virtuosity. Marsalis is clearly one of the greatest trumpeters of his generation. Anyone who doubts that clearly has no understanding of the instrument.

This recording is divided up between Wynton's septet and Ellis' trio. The musicians include: Wessell Anderson (alto & soprano saxophones); Victor Gaines (tenor saxophone, ... Read More

"The wonder of this recording, however, is that we hear such informed boldness from the leader and his players. Only extremely sophisticated musicians could make such complex arrangements swing so authoritatively (e.g., "The Song Is You"), then play with the time so effectively, creating and resolving tensions with an often stunning capacity for grace. The protean accuracy of the adjustments to one another and to the forms of the tunes makes it rather obvious that this is one of the best jazz groups now working. Yes, Marsalis has found himself some extremely talented players." ~ Stanley Crouch ~

Stanley Crouch has perfectly described what makes this album one of the best in jazz recordings. Wynton Marsalis is one of the gifted trumpet players in the jazz scene of today, whose expertise not only encompasses ballads, ... Read More
