"Swan Lake" has great meaning for me. I used to rent LPs and would play them in the basement of Fine Arts on the University of Georgia campus. This was in the '50s. There is nothing as soothing as "Swan Lake."

Music : Wagner: The Great Operas from the Bayreuth Festival
There's not really a lot to say about a package containing all post-Rienzi operas from Bayreuth at less than $2/disc. I can't seriously imagine anyone being disappointed by this set: cast after cast of superb singers, conductors -- all bathed in that glorious Bayreuth sound. Some might argue over one performance vs. others, but there are no disappointments here. Decca deserves congratulations for making this available.

I'm not opera literate, so I was looking for some kind of introduction that had some familiar arias and that would connect me to others that I had not heard. I liked that the notes with the cd indicated where a new listener may have heard some of the music (in a commercial, during an important scene in a movie, etc). This was the source of a lot of 'Ah ha!' moments. It even inspired me to rent a dvd of a live version of Turandot and to put others on my Netflix queue. I owe my newly aroused curiosity about opera, believe it or not, to Il Divo. I had to know what these guys sing when they're not reinterpreting pop songs. I'm glad I started this journey and this cd was a good start.

Repeated evocation of the word "perfect" in descriptions of this recording convinced me to buy it, and even in the midst of such lofty praise, I was not disappointed. To the contrary; Capriccio is amongst the most incisive and beautiful operas ever crafted, combining the intelligence and perspicacity of a truly outstanding libretto with all the beauty and sublimity of which the mature Strauss was capable. It is an opera for opera lovers, a piece of musical virtuosity that not only delights the listener, but brings to light the question of the nature of art, the source of the profundity found in music and verse; it is an opera about the nature of opera, and art itself. Perhaps appropriately for an opera examining the ideals of the artistic form, the cast and production are here utterly flawless; ... Read More

Lucia Popp came from my home country of Slovakia. In 1963, she took her chance and, as the amazingly talented 24-year-old ingenue, accepted the offer to sing in Vienna. She crossed the iron curtain. This for a long time made her and undesirable element in the Communist Czechoslovakia. Only after the collapse of Soviet block in 1989 she gained the due recognition also in her homeland. Tragically, just four years later she died of cancer, aged only 54...
What she left is the great body of work. She specialized on German and Austrian composers, which is evident also from this great compilation. However, anything she touched, she turned into gold.
On this double CD you can find many of her glorious recordings. Especially high recommended are all Mozart's (among them the famous Queen aria from Magic ... Read More

"It's all wrong! Absolutely wrong! [...] Sarah Chang has no idea how cute and fun this concerto is!"

Each to his or her own interpretation isn't it? Meaning that there is no right or wrong. The performance is excellent in technique as is the musicality. Overall such qualities in her performance make this an excellent recording.

For me, the first horn concerto of Richard Strauss is the finer work: it has all the ebullience of youth (rather like Beethoven's Pathetique sonata). The second concerto is mellower and has echos of Capriccio, which was composed about the same time.

Notwithstanding the presence of the inimitable Dennis Brain, the delight in this recording is the sparkling performance of the Philharmonia orchestra conducted by the under-rated Wolfgang Sawallisch. He memorably captures the passion of the first concerto and is equally at home with the more subtle nuances of the second.

this really is an amazing set. rarely are compilation sets filled with such consistently good music as well as offering the breadth and diversity found here. also, this is THE introduction to opera, as far as i'm concerned. if you don't enjoy opera after listening to this set, then opera is probably just not for you.

I bought this album because it had some favorites of mine and what looked to be an interesting composition of titles. It wasn't until I sat down to listen to it, did I fully realize how masterfully it had been put together. Most of the artists on here are well known (Such a Oriff's O Fortuna) with a few completely unheard of artists (to me). The CD's tracks were perfectly organized and each song came in a successive wave compiling into a series of deluges that becomes a great cresendo. Very powerful and very surprising. I am more than pleased and have subscribed myself to looking for more CD's by this company.

OperaD'Oro has issued a number of artistically excellent performances, however the technical quality is sometimes not up to today's standards. These (this CD is the first in a series of which there are currently 4 CDs) collections of excerts are of excellent technical and artistic quality. At the price, it is a real bargain.
