Andrew Parrott conducts the Taverner Consort and Players is a very affordable set of discs that allow everyone to experience the 'non-choral' choral Bach. Instead of the usual chorus (even the pared down choruses of 16 - 30 members the way most 'authentic' performances use) the works are assigned to one person per part. The result is light, airy, transparent, and very lovely Bach.

Case in point: for the Magnificat 'for 5 voices, 5-part chorus, orchestra & continuo' in D major, Parrott conducts or rather inspires Emily van Evera, Evelyn Tubb, Taverner Consort and Players, Howard Crook, Caroline Trevor, Simon Grant in a new way to hear this gracious work. That Bach can be interpreted in so many ways gives credence to his importance in musical history. This performance, as ... Read More

Heinrich Schutz almost bears the musical relationship to Bach that St. John the Forerunner does to Jesus Christ. Schutz' sacred music contains all the foreshadowing of Divine Masterpiece that you would expect of one who prefigured Bach's magnificent Cantatas. And yet, Schutz stands well on his own and is great in his own right.

Certainly, when Schutz fled to Venice during the 30 years' war and composed Symphoniae Sacrae I as an homage to Gabrielli, he earned his chops as a master. Years later, when he returned to his native German lands and tongue, he proved he had lost nothing.

Stephan Schreckenberger, a master of period music, brings this work, Symphoniae Sacrae III to life in a flawless rendition, with good technical and artistic qualities. The vocalists are talented ... Read More

Especially for a cornettist!

Honestly, however, I've been aware of these three cantatas by GP Telemann (1681-1767) all along. Packaging them together is a bit deceptive; they were not written together, or for the same occasion, or even for the same cantata cycle. "Erhoere mich, wenn ich rufe" dates from 1717. The other two cantatas were written for the church year of 1720/1721, with a different librettist. They are, nevertheless, similarly high-spirited works, not quite festive enough to haul out the trumpets and timpani, but joyous enough to call in the clowns...er, brass players...probably from an existing ensemble of town-pipers. The burning questions, from a musical history point of view, are 1) why Telemann chose to use the nearly moribund "cornetto" and 2) who could possibly have been the ... Read More

Thomas Carlyle is still around, with his grim Victorian hero worship, and nowhere have his Great Man theories of history thrived more than in musicology. I grew up with the Three B's - Bach, Beethoven, Brahms - though an antechamber of greatness was reserved for Wagner. The canonization of Bach really began with Felix Mendelssohn, and it's sad but true than Protestant chauvinism and German nationalism have contributed to a view of musical history that regards Bach as an isolated supernova which occurred before the Big Bang of Romanticism. I certainly don't wish to subtract an iota of Bach's luster. I've worshiped Bach all my life as faithfully as he worshiped his image of God. But Bach was not isolated; he was embedded in a rich musical culture where fine composers sprouted from every substantial town. Bach was ... Read More

For once I'm daunted by the task of reviewing this stunning performance of one of the greatest monuments of music. I'm tempted just to say BUY IT AND LIVE! But I'll try to gather my thoughts, after having listened to the 3-CD set several times with increasing admiration.

Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) began to prepare his "soul" for death around 1630, gradually turning over his duties at St. Mark's to his students. It was the proper thing to do for a man his age in that age of ever-present mortality. The plague had taken 50,000 victims in Venice that winter. Monteverdi's musical productivity was on the wane. In 1632, he took holy orders as a priest, again a common step for a man confronting the final judgment.

But then, over the next decade-plus, Monteverdi produced two of the greatest operas ... Read More

Hermann Max conducting the Rheinische Kantorei and the Kleine Konzert. Performers : Ann Monoyios, soprano; David Cordier, alto; Wilfried Jochens, tenor; Stephan Schreckenberger, bass.

Positive review in Fanfare 1993 by Tom Moore, also posted on his home page at Princeton. Moore prefered this brisk 1992 recording to the slower 1966 one by Harnoncourt on Teldec.
