Previously, a reviewer wrote:

"Karajan in 1962 wanted to perform Beethoven in a modern way compared to the overtly spiritual, often very slow, heavy, and rubato-laden style of the past in Germany. ... in the last movement Karajan takes the vocal line faster...

"By comparison, Karajan wasn't as hectically fast or intense as Toscanini,..."

I don't wish to take anything away from Karajan's technical mastery, his orchestra's wonderful sound, or his "smoothness." It's all good.

But folks should understand the real reason Karajan's original recorded version of this work, at least in terms of its tempos, comes out as the previous reviewer accurately observed. He kept to his version in subsequent recordings, of which this 1962 recording may accurately ... Read More

There's no other way to put it. Beside Cooke's landmark musical analysis, all other examinations of Wagner's Ring Cycle shrink to insignificance. This work is absolutely vital to anyone who'd genuinely grasp the unique musical language of this greatest of operatic masterpieces. Before Cooke, musical commentary was limited to pitiful motif lists. Analysts seem to have quite ignored Wagner's own belief the musical language of his vast tetralogy evolves organically. Cooke is the first to grasp and investigate this concept and, to this day, the only one to fathom it in so complete a manner. He presents his brilliant discoveries with succinct easily-grasped verbal explanations illustrated by sonic examples either from the great Solti recording, or created specially for this analysis, an unmistakable gauge of how much Sir Georg believed ... I started out with the Levine/Met dvd of this opera/cycle. As most reviewers know, that dvd tends to make the more subtle, quiet portions of the Ring seem endless (just check out the Die Walkure portion). I can't knock that dvd collection too much, because it at least gave me an idea of a more traditional Ring, and hey, the Das Rheingold part of the cycle was often very good (LOVE Christa Ludwig's Fricka! Timeless!).

Because of my being advised by knowledgeable Wagnerites that I had mostly been cheated out of a more dynamic Ring recording, I began collecting the Solti-conducted version, buying one part of the cycle a month. I felt that this was the best way to fully absorb the operas; Das Rheingold one month, Die Walkure the next, etc. This approach worked where the Levine dvd ultimately failed: I was able to hear the Ring recorded ... I was disappointed in the sound quality of the (stereo-only) SACD layer. Upon checking the liner notes, my fears were confirmed. The SACD layer was taken from a 96/24 PCM recording, and so sounds no better than that. Pure analog to DSD recordings (e.g. the RCS Living Stereo series) seem to produce a warmer sound with greater dynamics.

8.Missa Solemnis in D major, op.123 by: L.V. Beethoven, Otto Klemperer, New Philharmonia Orchestra

Music : Missa Solemnis in D major, op.123
At the risk of sounding like a philistine, nothing of Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis" moves me. I purchased it after having read it praised by KR Jamison in her excellent book, "Exuberance," and reading that Beethoven considered it his best work. Unlike Bach's "St. Matthew Passion" and "Magnificat," or Vivaldi's "Gloria," I found none of the movements melodic. Given all the great music Beethoven composed, I would rank Missa rather low. Perhaps my taste may mature as I enter my 60s and may look back on this review with chagrin.

Music : Karl Böhm Conducts Mozart and Strauss
I am always skeptical of historical reissues. They always remind me of W. S. Gilberts line in the Mikado of the person who likes every country but his own. What could be so wrong with the music being recorded today to justify resurrecting some dusty old recording? Naturally I throw all this logic out when it is from a conductor that has moved me in the past. Boehm provided me with much of my introduction to Mozart and Strauss in my youth. Most of the recordings here are great performances in good sound. Anyone familiar only with his late Vienna Philharmonic recordings will not recognize much of this Mozart. Muscular and quick moving are not usually the adjectives one associates with Dr. Boehm. The sound on the earliest of these recordings from Decca in Vienna is not at all flattering. It has an acidic sheen to the strings that seems out of place with what this company produced in ... Read More
