Horowitz wouldn't know musical phrasing if you put a gun to his head. If you just like to hear shapeless pounding on the keyboard, however, this disc is for you. If not, there are tons of worthwhile alternatives.

Who knew the freshness that Horowitz brought to this canon? In one selection, he presages a connection to composers such as Glass and Adams. In another, the depth of feeling reaches out to the listener powerfully. This is a very enjoyable discovery for a non-expert.

In his book "Evenings With Horowitz", the eminent piano professor David Dubal quotes someone by the name of James Hilton (an author, I think) who wrote: "If by some dispensation a man born deaf were to be given hearing for a single hour he might well spend the whole time with Horowitz. Indeed, when I listened to Horowitz for the first time, it was almost like that - as if I had never heard the piano before - as if the instrument itself had never known what it could do until Horowitz came along."

Listen to this CD and you will no doubt agree. As Dubal says elsewhere, Horowitz somehow unlocked the secrets of sonority on the piano. Listen to Earl Wild's or Alfred Brendel's or Jean-Yves Thibaudet's recordings of the Liszt/Wagner Liebestod. Then listen to Horowitz's - it's a revelation, it's shocking, it's hard to comprehend. ... This is a MUST for all Horowitz fans. The Horowitz technique is unparalleled, and you must hear him play in front of an audience after 12 years.

I think it is one of his best performances -- maybe because I like the way he played things I've heard at other Horowitz performances.

But, I like all of his music, and a new performance of the same piece is a little different than others -- but all very interesting.

Rachmaninov, on hearing Horowitz play his difficult concerto in private to him, remarked to someone afterwards, that VH "had swallowed it whole!" Need one say more?

I was fortunate enough to find this collection used for only 20 bucks, and I would easily pay more for it. This set contains the albums Horowitz at Home, Horowitz in Moscow, Horowitz plays Mozart, The Last Romantic, Horowitz the Poet, and the 1985 studio recordings. All of the music is superb and you will see it frequently released in Horowitz compilation cds. I highly recommend this collection for any Horowitz lover or as a collection to get into Horowitz.

These are two of the best recordings ever made of these works. The sound is excellent, even in the live recording of the Tchaikovsky, made in 1943. Highly recommended.
