Glass is great, but Yo-Yo Ma really makes this album a masterpiece. Much better than the others. Highly recommended.

Octet and Music for a Large Ensemble are two of my favorite Steve reich works. Octet has lots of low winds and piano, giving it a lot of charm and textural warmth. Music for a Large Ensemble has more of an urgent feel, more of a piercing texture at times, and is also a beautiful piece (one of his best, I think). If you like Reich's earlier style, along the lines of Music for Eighteen Musicians, you will probably like these - Violin Phase is more of a novelty to me, as I am more drawn to Steve's pieces that have more harmonic motion (like the other two I just mentioned). If you've never heard Steve Reich, this disk would be a fine start, offering great recordings of two complex, somewhat epic pieces, and a sample of his earliest style (phasing by manipulating tape speeds)

I really enjoyed listening to this cd. His voice is very soothing and easy to listen to. I especially enjoy listening to "Last Morning of my Life". It includes songs made famous by others such as"Back on my Feet" and "Young Girl". I have his other cd which features music from various operas. I would say you won't be sorry that you bought this cd!!!!!!

Music : Music For 18 Musicians
The section that begins at 31:08 and continues for the next 10 minutes is emotional, mesmerizing, magical, and exhausting. One of my truly favorite musical moments. It's also the section that Tangerine Dream reproduce electronically in Make Love on a Real Train which you can hear in the big romantic/erotic fantasy scene in Risky Business. And you can also hear this section done twice in different ways on ambient electronica group Global Communications' 76:14.

This disc, containing seven short works and two longer ones dating from Carter's late eighties and early nineties, continues Bridge's invaluable series of recordings of works by this modern American master. As with all Bridge's recordings, the performers are almost always musicians with a long history of performing Carter's music (here including the group Speculum Musicae, the cellist Fred Sherry and the pianist Charles Rosen), and this certainly helps to give the performances an authoritative air.

The disc starts with a bang--Carter's bass clarinet solo Steep Steps (so titled because of the importance of leaps of a twelfth in the composition). This is a vigorous and highly enjoyable work that provides an ideal disc opener. More dry are the Two Diversions, two pieces for the advanced piano student. These two ... Read More

8.Tehillim from: Ecm Records
April 12, 1994
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : Tehillim
Tehillim differs from most other works by Reich. It has long lyrical melodies. It has singing. The rhythm never repeats itself; it sounds like a random combination of twos and threes. It has chromatic harmonies. It has a more spontaneous, emotional feel, rather than being calculated and mechanical. So even people who don't like Reich's other works might enjoy this one.

This New World CD collates the partial contents of two LPs. NW 285 was published in 1978 and had Ruth Crawford's Three Songs in addition to the Wind Quintet of Wallingford Riegger, Cowell's Quartet Romantic and John Becker's "The Abongo". NW 319 was released in 1984 and, other than Cowell's Paragraphs, Crawford's Suite No. 2 and Lou Harrison's Trio (played by an ensemble credited back then as the "New Music Consort", but not anymore on the CD reissue), also had Cowell's Pulse for Percussion Sextet and Cage's Third Construction for Percussion Quartet.

All these composers are somehow linked to one another. Wallingford Riegger and John J. Becker are the two less reputed members of the group know in the 1920s as the "American Five", along with Ives, Ruggles and Cowell. Cowell met Ruth Crawford in the early 1920s. In ... Read More
