Wonderful but to set matters straight the complete Command Performance 2 LP set is NOT on these 6 CDS ; it appears the entire 2nd LP is missing (songs by Arditi, Tosti, Bishop, Balfe and Wallace among others) and also the Pagliacci aria from LP 1 of the LP set is missing as well. The Command Performance set should be reissued.

Although Jackie du Pre's playing in the Elgar, Delius and Schoenberg concerti was superb, I for one simply find nothing to admire in that music. Perhaps this is my fault, perhaps not, but in general there are so many superb recordings of the Haydn and Dvorak concerti that only the sentiments surrounding her decline into MS and early death recommend them.

On the other hand, the recordings of the Chopin, Beethoven and other sonatas in the second 3 discs of this set are among the most moving recordings ever made. Jackie never had quite the golden tone or perfect technique of Feuermann or Yo-Yo Ma, and this shows itself more in the Bach unaccompanied cello suites where she plays a few scratchy-sounding turns, but the deep-down love and emotional commitment of her playing always communicated ... This is my favorite Sutherland collection. It has so much from so many periods. The bits from The French Opera Gala are beyond belief. It is some of the best coloratura she ever did and was recorded at a great part of her career. Both the Wagner and the Mozart discs were recorded when she was close to 60, which doesn't mean that much with Sutherland. Still it would have been great to have heard the Wagner recorded a decade earlier when she recorded the Turandot. She would have been better at Wagner than anyone around today. Not Nilsson or Flagstad's equal, but better by far than Voigt, who isn't bad. On the Mozart bits, a couple sound old, but the rest are as good a performance of Mozart as you are ever going to hear. Many people only like the young Sutherland, but I like the color and richness her voice ... Read More

I probably own too many Christmas CDs, which contain a great deal of duplication. Many of them, though good, are indistinguishable from one another. But 'The Ultimate Christmas Album', a compilation of holiday recordings culled from London's vaults, has set itself apart. It has been my most-played Christmas CD for several years now.

The recordings are unparalleled; the Bach Choir's vigorous "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" (complete with thunderous pipe organ), Pavarotti's tender "Ave Maria" and "O Holy Night", Leontyne Price's spritely "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and wistful "Silent Night", the crystaline children's voices in the Choir of Trinity School's reading of "The First Nowell"--every selection on this CD could stand alone as a highlight.

In terms of quantity, Bach and Handel's orchestral music occupies only a small part of their total works. There are many masterpieces amongst them, however. In the case of Handel, the concerti grossi and most of the organ concerti are works of high order, as are the famous "Fireworks Music" and "Water Music".

EMI have selected for their "Handel" box, all these works, together with several violin sonatas and a few other miscellaneous items. The recordings date from the years 1962-1970. This was the time when Yehudi Menuhin successfully extended his music making activities, collecting eminent instrumentalists around him while leading as violinist. These are not the recordings of Handel music he made later during his more problematic phase as conductor.

I don't recommend this box to those ... Read More

This performance is first rate. The approach is a little different but for the most part, works extremely well. Very satisfying. The other favorable reviewers got it right. And, I'll let their explanations stand with no need of further embellishment from me. With all performance art, there is room for all kinds of different interpretations, and which ever style one prefers is all very subjective. But, this is a valid approach which taken on its own terms, is highly successful and most beautiful.
