Having authored the first "authorized" biography of an anthemic rock group (I Want to Take You Higher: The Life and Times of Sly & the Family Stone, available through amazom), I've been psyched about how music can rouse a nation. Sousa's creations have been fueling that spirit for over a century now, and it's great to be able to hear on one recording what we've heard marching through our streets and across football fields and movie and tv screens all these years, along with a few less familiar tunes. Years ago, I've baught an album (LP) from The Navy Band in Italy. I've never heard US-marches before, but liked them from the start. Now I'm very happy to have this album and two other ones on CD. If you like marches you'll like this CD.

I love that Fred Thompson is on this album. Though his bid for the presidency was unsuccessful this is a great treat on a great album.

It seems rather incredible that this recording is taken from a live concert, because the balances between the different sections is so perfectly achieved, and there is such perfection in the playing. However, what comes across in this CD is the excitement of a live performance, the magic, especialy in the Carmen Symphony by Bizet-Serebrier. I remember that this work won the Latin GRAMMY a couple of years ago on a CD with the orchestral version. This new band version is even better and more lively than the previous one. Carmen Symphony is a terrific work. The United Sates Marine Band are obviously great, and they seem inspired by the baton of Jose Serebrier, who conducts them in masterful performances of the Suite from the Ballet "Estancia" by Alberto Ginastera in a riveting performance. ... I ordered this CD on June 30 and it is now Aug 7 and it has not shipped yey - promised date missed twice - now saying it will ship Aug 23. I would not buy from them again.

For all the stupid people who wrote a bad review of this CD, all I have to say is GET A CLUE PEOPLE. These are ORIGINAL RECORDINGS from the early 1900's. There were no DIGITAL recordings, there were no high end high definition microphones, no mixing boards, nothing we are used to and spoiled with now. All I have to say is these people are STUPID. To have an ORIGINAL recording of Sousa's band with Sousa conducting the pieces the way they were intended is a valuable tool for musicologists as well as average students and musicians. Obviously the people who wrote the reviews are uneducated or just plain ignorant. I recommend this CD to any REAL musician who can appreciate having these original recordings. Yes, I have a music degree from an accredited university.

It's not the greatest CD but for the price it's an excellent sample of military music. If you want something to wet your appetite or something to give to a friend to get them started this is the CD for you. It's a great introduction to the great music of our military bands. It has tastes from a wide variety of composers and styles. They make great stocking stuffers for old buddies or historically minded friends alike. If you can have Christmas in July why not July in Christmas. This will make you feel like the fourth of July and is great background music for fireworks. If your not sure if military band music for you this is a good safe bet to try out, but if your an expert in the drama you might like something more like this.
