This is the best music you never heard. Hank Levy was a giant and a true pioneer of odd meter jazz. He wrote a lot of music in 5/4, 7/4, 9/4, etc. Several of the tunes on this record are of this genre. Hank wrote a lot of stuff for Don Ellis and Stan Kenton (he had played for Kenton as a young baritone sax player). All of these songs are Levy arrangements and most are Levy compositions. Passacaglia & Fugue should be a jazz classic, among others. Most of the music was written in the 1970's while Levy was at what was then called Towson State College (now Towson University) where he led the superb Towson State Jazz Ensemble. The band is about the tightest big band you'll ever hear, reminiscent of the magnificent Basie band in the 1960's, but playing much more difficult arrangements. ... Read More
