Ideally, I'd have given this recording 4.5 stars (the thing that bothers me is Marie Collier's howling and crying as Chrysothemis: much as it is indeed called-for in the score, it seems overdone...); since that's not available, let it have the full 5 as it otherwise deserves it. This is particularly so given its presenting the full uncut musical text of the opera (apparently all the other recordings, with the possible exception of the Sawallisch, have the same 6-7 cuts that are usually made with staged performances); in any case, the performances (particularly those of Solti and the Wiener Philharmoniker, as well as of Nilsson and Krause - what power!!!) make this recording an absolute must in any serious classical music collection - especially with any Straussians! People, do your best ... Read More

I have been listening to operas since i was a teenager, I am now in my late sixties. I have acquired for the first time a recording of Elektra. This recording is fantastic. I have heard her in person with the Minneapolis Symphony in the 1960s and she is superb. Of course I am referring to Birgit Nilsson. The conducting by Solti is magnificent. I would recommend this recording to any person who love great singing.

Wow! What a voice! This 2 CD set features 40 of Carlo Bergonzi's works. It represents a remarkable portrait of his body of work. The "liner notes" observe that he had a reputation "as a singer of rare refinement, exemplary style, and impeccable taste. . . ."

Some examples of his work:

"Che gelida manina": This exquisite work from Puccini's "La Boheme" is superbly sung. There is, to be sure, an occasional affectation, but his rich, smooth voice renders this a trifling concern. Listen to the power and richness of his voice on such words as "millionaria," "forziere," and "la speranza" (hope I came close to spelling the words right!). What a lustrous voice. . . .

"O soave fanciulla": This duet with Renata Tebaldi (talk about a "dream duo") is exquisite. Bergonzi's ... Read More

The recording is fine but I was disappointed that no libretto was included. When you pay the high dollar, you expect the complete package. I wish Amazon would include that information in its specs.

It is an unfortunate side effect of modern life that the traditional sources of a classical education are disappearing. Because many classical music radio stations have transformed into yet another commercial outlet of top 40 pap, access to classical music for the general public is generally limited to movies or television in the form of background music. These sources rarely credit their music, so most people are left wondering what is was they heard and enjoyed.

I am known to enjoy classical music and my friends often ask me for listening suggestions.(What is wrong with the public schools? They should be teaching this.) Normally, I shy away from collections like "Adagios" or "The Art of Herbert von Karajan" as they generally show little thought in their organization. I do enjoy and would recommend this ... Read More

Too many times one can get lured into spinning miester. I bought this CDs upon 5 star rating by several Amazon listeners. Now having heard all five available reportoirs : this one, Solti/VPO, Bohm/DPO, Sinopoli/VPO, and RCG/Dohnanyi, I can say that Solti's Sofiensaal-recorded version is the one to get. There, Decca has cleaned up the sound using Cedar/SNS 96KHz/24 bit technology, but more so on the drama, tension, superb noise-making by VPO, and overall feel of getting the value from the money well spent.

Here is the analysis of this CD: The sound quality here is mono, muffled, and with lots of hiss, if you are trying to listen to the soprano. It sounds more like recording from Bayreuth (esteemed venue of worst recordings), but actually from a live performance from Salzburg Festival on 17th August 1964 at the Großes Festspielhaus.(see ...
