I am a die hard TC fan and have seen them live multiple times, this album is NOT GOOD AT ALL, period. It builds off what they have learned and created in the last ten years but THEN WHAT???? Nothing. Nothing new, more dub rapping, sittar riffs and... what else? It is a lazy effort at best, as if they were partying for the last two years and then realized its time to make a new album. In addition, whats with the crappy packaging?? these guys need to fire their marketing dept because it is just the definition of a useless effort. For an album that rebels against radio airplay , they seemed to have adapted the mentality of the radio establishment, more of the same mediocrity but spend more money on the promotion of it. i hope one or both of the founding members read this because when you guys ... If you're looking to check out Thievery Corporation, this is the place to start. I got into them a few years ago, and this is their best, most consistent album from start to finish. I usually only like around 1/2 of the songs on their albums, but this one has no clunkers. Cosmic Game or Richest Man in Babylon are the next best.

Released in 2002, THE RICHEST MAN IN BABYLON is the third album and second mature effort by Washington D.C.-based lounge duo Thievery Corporation. Eric Hilton and Rob Garza specialize in a globalist chillout style that, from a musical standpoint, is pretty insubstantial fluff but which works quite well in the background for setting the mood. In common with their last album THE MIRROR CONSPIRACY, we find French vocals over a sitar ("Un Simple Histoire") and samba stylings ("Meu Destino"). There are samples from the Smithsonian's Rastafarian Elders CD ("The Outernationalist", "From Creation") and faux-1960s epic film scores ("Interlude").

A new aspect of Thievery Corporation's sound on THE RICHEST MAN are vocals that actually communicate something instead of being just spliff-inspired ... Read More

I bought this because I am a musician and composer in a small way and wanted to study the bass, drums an loops. This was helpful for this but I also found it was very entertaining and satisfying listening as long as you are happy will loops. It was an excellent sound and very well produced.

Discovered on an Internet radio. I love the "dynamics" rythms.
Some songs make me remind of west indies sounds.

There is nothing to say here that a 5 Star reviewer has not said before. It's the best effort in a commendable series (DJ-Kicks)and stands atop the always worthy Thievery Catalog. It is also the most electronic of the compilations and creations they have assembled.

While Thievery Corporation's first full album is less sophisticated than their later outings its rawer, less "crafted" style means that its best tracks have a distinctly more exciting edge. "The Glass Bead Game", "So Vast is the Sky" and ".38.45" just jump out of the speakers with their highly infectious mix of electronica, hip-hop & dub while "Shaolin Satellite's" drivingly addictive beats and multi-layered swathes of organs & sitars put it up there with the very best of the whole electronica/dance scene. Others drift, often much too languidly, between genres giving a rambling and disjointed feel to the album as a whole but, if you're a fan of Thievery Corporation or of high quality downbeat "world" music then what's good on it is too good to miss.

I find it funny that so many Thievery Corporation fans are reviewing this disc. This is pretty much a JAZZ disc of music from the 50's and 60s with tracks that just happen to be chosen by the Thievery Corporation. There was no sampling or editing, or anything. Just original music from 50 odd years ago. With all that said, I find this compilation to be excellent. If you like Bossa Nova, or some cool laid back jazz, then you'll probably like this disc. The music is lively but light. Give it a try, if you do, all your wildest dreams will come true. Ok, maybe not, but this is one fine CD.
