Pretty disappointing with not a single remarkable song. After so many great albums over the years this is a miss rather than a hit.

The original "A Very Special Christmas". I remember buying the LP when it first came out and loved it so much that I decided to get the CD recently. Still a classic. Great Album.

This CD from The Pretenders is a step up from The Singles in that it moves from the albums after Get Close and up to Viva el Amor!. You get a bonus cut in "State Of Independence" (not necessarily a plus) and better sound. Nineteen songs in all, from the cool fire of "Brass In Pocket" to their best rocker, "Middle of The Road," the actual bonuses are "Human" (a remix from the "Viva" CD and a shoulda-been hit) and "I'll Stand By You" from Last of the Independents. What the set should have done was add a cut from Packed!, like the underrated "Sense of Purpose." Or maybe an alternate live song or two from The Isle of View. It would be nice for maybe Rhino to get this out domestically, too. But given the disc at hand, this is the best single CD collection of The Pretenders available. ... Read More

Chrissie Hynde has a gorgeous-smokey-sexy voice -- it's unique and she's so cool. What makes "Learning to Crawl" so special for me is the bonus tracks ... "My City was Gone" rocks hard (twice) because of the bonus live track. They're cover song of "Money" (Beatles) is the best I've ever heard. If you're a Pretender's fan, you want this.

The obvious dilemma facing any female who fronts an otherwise all-male group is that she can easily be classified as nothing more than eye candy either onstage or on the subsequent CD covers. Such is not the case with Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders anymore than it is the case with Debbie Harry of Blondie or Theresa Starr of the Echoes. All three ladies plainly govern their groups with their musical partners often being interchangeable, save for Martin Chambers of the Pretenders, Chris Stein of Blondie, or Mark Alexander of the Echoes. When Chrissie Hynde returned in 1981 (following the Pretenders' self-titled debut Pretenders), I believed this hard-rocking woman in her schoolgirl bangs, scary dark eyeliner, and tight jeans, when she told the world, "bad boys get spanked." The Pretenders' second album was the final release from the original band. It was soonafter the release of this album that the "original" Pretenders (1978-1982) (consisting of Chrissie Hynde on vocals and guitar, James Honeyman-Scott on guitar, vocals, and keyboards, Pete Farndon on bass guitar and vocals, and Martin Chambers on percussion and vocals) suffered the death of Honeyman-Scott in 1982 from a cocaine overdose, and the death of Farndon in 1983 from a heroin overdose. 28 years after it's debut, I still shake my head in wonderment when I listen to this monumental debut. The only thing different is that I now listen to it on compact disc instead of vinyl. And when I hear the UK national anthem, I will always remember the Pretenders show I was lucky enough to see in 1980 (at Golden Hall in downtown San Diego)with Bow-Wow-Wow opening for them. They always played the UK anthem standing facing the Union Jack before they played a single note at all of their live performances. James Honeyman Scott instantly won me over as the new king of the Stratocaster. Hynde, looked so damned sexy in tight black leather pants with that butterscotch Tele slung over her shoulder, her voice defining an attitude never equaled by any female singer of the rock genre since. Released just after "The Last of the Independents", "Isle of View" features an unusual apporach for The Pretenders--strings added to an acoustic live performance (although they are missing from "Private Life"). Featuring the longest running version of the line up (Hynde, drummer Martin Chambers who had rejoined the band and former Katydids guitarist Adam Seymour who would be the first guitarist since original guitar player James Honeyman-Scott to co-write material for the band on the next two albums),it's an unusual apporach that helps the band reinvent classics such as "Lovers of Today". The band is in top form throughout the performance (which also aired on MTV originally back in the day as part of its "Unplugged" series of concerts).
