I am a musical novice. I was brought up listening to Pink Floyd, Santana, Joni Mitchell, and so on. I could not read music to save my life. Then someone introduced me to some Josquin Des Pres Rennaissance Polyphony - Missa L'homme arme sexti toni, Agnus Dei, to be specific - and I was totally hooked.

A few years later, someone introduced me to this CD, and I was even more taken. For some reason, I really like the Perotin-composed pieces - tracks 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9. The Beata viscera (track 8) is other-worldly, and quite possibly one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard in my entire life!

You don't have to be a musical scholar to enjoy this - it's simply beautiful!

There are two ways you can listen to this recording: first, as an elegantly elegiac performance of Bach's Partita in D minor for solo violin, played by Christoph Poppen, interspersed with marvelously plaintive singing of several of Bach's chorale settings by the Hilliard Ensemble augmented by soprano Monica Mauch; second, as a challenging intellectual exercise, a musicological demonstration of the sources of the partita in phrases quoted from selected chorales, in the mystical lore of numerology, and in allusions to the seasonal 'feasts' of the Christian calendar. This "Bach Code" is elucidated very convincingly in the thick booklet that accompanies the CD, in essays by Herbert Glossner and Helga Thoene. And if your ears can't quite pick out of the Partita the elements of the code, the profound Ciaconna, ... Read More

I came across this album while walking through the halls of the MET in Midtown. I walked home that night with the CD, I was 16 years or so. Now at 30, I still listen to this album regularly, and now put my kids to sleep with this album as part of a nightly mix of Officium, Tim Janis, and Thomas Otten...

This 2005 ECM disc is the latest in the label's long survey of Arvo Part and pairs two pieces from the Estonian composer. Like the earlier Orient & Occident disc, this one shows Part trying to set off in a bold new direction while at the same time preserving those elements of his personal musical language that have gained him such a wide following.

Part wrote "Lamentate" for piano and orchestra (2003) after encountering Anish Kapoor's installation "Marsyas" in the Tate Gallery in London. "Marsyas" is a remarkable work, and I urge the reader to search for photographs of it. When viewing it, Part felt acutely reminded of his own mortality and confronted with the problem of how to make something of his life in the face of death. The title of the resulting concerto of sorts refers to this, Part calls the piece ... Read More

The Italian madrigals on this CD don't do much for me. I don't know if it's because I don't know most of them, or because I don't care for the male ensemble performing them. I do like the English CD, though. It's a good reference for many standard madrigals found in the Oxford Book of English Madrigals. The pieces using mixed voices have the clear, light sound with impeccable tuning that one would expect with the Hilliard Ensemble. The pieces using all male voices aren't as good to my ear, with the upper voice sounding a bit strident. As noted in other reviews I've written, I'm a big fan of historical pronunciation which is used in this recording. It adds a nice touch and is well done. I wish more early music ensembles would give attention to this oft-ignored but very important facet of performance. Far from turning the music into ... Read More

That's the "cantus firmus" - the pattern of sustained notes around which the harmony is composed - of the Missa Hercules Dux Ferrariae by Josquin Deprez (1440-1521). It translates into modern pitches as "D-C-D-C-D-F-E-D". It's derived from matching the vowels of the hexachord ut-re-mi-fa-so-la with the vowels of the name hErcUlEs dUx fErrArIE. Hercules in this cryptogram is Duke Ercole d'Este of Ferrara, to whom the mass was obviously dedicated. Those eight notes form the subtle melodic basis for the entire mass composition; they are heard again and again, sometimes almost subliminally, transposed to higher pitches, inverted, stretched and condensed. Renaissance polyphony is full of such cryptic coded messages, as well as remarkably complex mathematical puzzles expressed in the notation of the era. And occasionally, whole lines of ... Read More

Abii ne viderem' (I turned away so as not to see) is comprised of 3 pieces - 'Morning Prayers' and 'Evening Prayers' (from a four-part cycle titled "Life without Christmas"), which frame the middle section 'Abii ne viderem,' from which the CD takes its name. This beautiful music burns with spiritual poignancy, anguish, and memory of lost time and childhood. In 'Morning Prayers', how can four notes played simply and slowly on the piano - F#, D, E, D, accompanied in the base by seven slowly ascending notes of the D Major scale reveal such sorrow and resignation of heart? This is the miracle of Kancheli's music. Mixed into this 23 minute meditation is the haunting taped voice of a young boy, singing like a voice from a grave floating over the stillness, and a small melody reminiscent of a child's wind-up music box played on a what seems ...
