Most of the other reviewers have made good points so I'll try to be brief and not repeat. I was always a fair weather Talking Heads fan and finally got fully into them with the live "The Name of This Band..." release. I was overcome and had to go out and get their first four releases. I feel the best wat to explore this band is to start at the beginning and you can slowly trace their progress from an educated pop band all the way into their more produced rhythms and textures. I always remember a review from Rolling Stone about one of their shows at a festival when they suddenly appeared as an eight piece, or so, band. It may not seem like the same band if you just have one disc of the entire career. It seems jolting somewhat all the transitions they have gone through. I would strongly recommend ... Read More

Whilst the first half of this album contains the CLASSIC Once In A Lifetime and excellent The Great Curve, Crosseyed And Painless and Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On), the second half of this album is rather a snooze fest, with slow, moody songs with sparse instrumentation.

The first four songs are worth this purchase, though be warned about the last four. I particularly recommend the 2006 CD/DVD remaster, the two videos live from German TV show RockPop are great, but the 5.1 remix doesn't do much for me.

Overall, weak compared to their superior previous album, 1979's Fear Of Music. Get that before getting this one.

A brief survey of the musical landscape from about 1963 until the present yields the following results:

1. There are a lot of people who write and perform songs that are about nothing;
2. There are some people who write and perform songs that are about something;
3. There are precious few people who can write songs that are essentially about nothing and in constructing and performing them, turn them into songs that are about something.

David Byrne's unique genius, as far as I can tell, is his ability to slot himself (with band in tow) into the third category. Now perhaps this isn't quite a fair, accurate assessment of his body of work, because in a sense the songs he wrote during this period are indeed about something, in fact they are about a lot of things. But ... Read More

Variously described as punk rock, art rock, alternative rock, and new wave, The Talking Heads originally formed in 1974 and became one of many cutting-edge bands to emerge from New York's legendary CBGB'S, the proving ground of such diverse acts as Patti Smith, Blondie, Television, and Mink DeVille. By 1977 the band had sufficient momentum to get a record deal and within a few years the band began to register on both sides of the Atlantic--but although they were well known to fans of alternative music, it wasn't really until 1983 that Talking Heads truly crashed the music charts. The release that did it was SPEAKING IN TONGUES.

According David Byrne, the lyrics were originally ad libbed nonsense phrases--but these ad libs gradually developed a life of their own, and while each phrase in each song ... Read More

Our radio staion 100.1 THEX started playing this song by the Talking Heads and my husband went crazy over it. We could never get the radio station to take our call and they never said the name of the song after it was played. Well, thanks to Amazon you can play snips of the songs from the albums. I was able to suprise my excited husband and give it to him as a "Just Because" gift.

Thanks so much

One of the better things to come out of the 80s. Although I have heard that this is not considered the best work the Talking Heads has ever done, it is intelligent enough to remain timeless, enjoyable enough to listen to anywhere, and sensible enough to speak to the everyday listener.
Give it a listen!

There's little that I can add to the reviews already here in regards to the music and selections. It's great stuff, and a pleasure to hear.

I just wanted to caution buyers who might be getting this from an independent seller that this is a 2 CD set! Each CD has its own jewel case and then there's an over-case uniting the two. I twice ordered it from such sellers who had only the first CD and did not realize there was another one. They graciously refunded my money but save yourself the trouble I had and ask your seller to verify physically that they have both CD's before you order.

My first way over-long Amazon.com review of Rhino's 2004 double CD extended version of "The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads" was an unfocused diatribe concerning the dynamics of the group that eventually split them apart, and may have resulted in this CD package being, shall we say, not quite the masterpiece that it perhaps could have been. It is 98.9 percent perfect, a glorious representation of America's most important and influential post-punk new wave art rock band, an idiom that Talking Heads more or less invented all on their own. If nothing else, this CD package is a glorious representation of their development from a (first three piece then) four piece idiosyncratic proto-punk band into the musical powerhouse Pop Art rock band that produced their big hits. And even with it's one glaring flaw it is a much more ... Read More

This album is musical stew. Now, at first glance, my first sentence may make about as much sense as the album's name, which is one of my favorite album titles ever. But the stretch from tracks two through nine pretty much runs together for me. It's like a stew, and well, I enjoy parts of the stew more than others.
First, let's talk about our pre- and post-stew tracks. You've got the charged-up, catchy New Wave rocker "Thank You For Sending Me an Angel" - one of my favorite Talking Heads songs, and certainly the best on the album. The two post-stew songs are quite good as well: the funky cover of "Take Me to the River", a just Top 40 hit for the group; and "The Big Country", a country-New Wave hybrid that mocks rural American values.
Then you've got the stew. The stew is overall a bland mix, with some excellent ... Read More

People picking up The Talking Head's debut album for the first time may be in for a surprise, especially if they're used to the eccentric experimentation of the "Remain In The Light" era, or the commercialized pop of the "Little Creatures" era. Back in 1977, the Talking Heads were a punk band but mostly only in their ethics. They played simple rock tunes but most of them lacked the raw energy of punk as played by the Ramones or Clash. Indeed, much of the music here sounds like late 60s and early 70 pop rock. What seperates these songs from post-psychedelic pop, however, is the lyrics and frantic atmosphere that would go on to characterise much of The Talking Head's music in the coming years.

David Byrne's singing style is paranoid and tense and the lyrics are as abstract and arty as any art-rock album. In a way, this ... Read More
