Nice introduction to the work of T-Bone Walker! He was one of the best of the bluesmen. The liner notes from the CD provide nice background to Walker's work. Many heard him live when he was well past his prime, not knowing the full skills of his art.

Even two songs illustrate. . . .

"Bobby Sox Blues" was an early popular song of Walker's. The backing group supports his singing well. He displays a smooth singing voice. The song itself spoofed the teenagers' giddiness over Sinatra and Eckstine.

And then there is his iconic ""Stormy Monday. . . ." This is one of the great blues tunes. Walker's voice serves this song well. The backing instruments have a clean sound and back the singer very nicely. The liner notes say that "If T-Bone had done nothing ... Read More

Are you kidding, who do you think Eric Clapton learned his best licks from?? Yep, T-Bone. This CD has no bad, average, or even great recordings on it. They are all spectacular!! T-Bone is the master of the "modern" blues style, yeah, like Eric Clapton, only earlier and beautiful music in his own right.

The sound is a little old-fashioned, but the playing remains of interest. Not as flamboyant as many of the modern players - just good, solid blues that is consistently entertaining. A classic.

For someone who is not familiar with T-Bone Walker, CDs featuring his recordings from the 1950s might be a better introduction. If, on the other hand, you find that you just can't get enough T-Bone, "Stormy Monday Blues - The Essential Collection" ought to be on the top of your list. It contains songs that he recorded for the ABC Bluesway label in 1967 and 1968. The CD's insert refers to it as "highlights", but as far as I can tell, it's the complete Bluesway recordings. It was late in his career, and T-Bone's customary arrangements and playing style were becoming dated. So presumably in order to appeal to a newer audience the decision was made to funkify things on a handful of the songs - a commercial ploy with results that are every bit as clever and urbane as any of his other recordings, with the ... Amazon's review calls this a budget release, which may be a bit misleading. This is the exact equivalent of any of the JSP blues boxes. The packaging is very cheap, but the music is major-label quality and remastered(just like JSP). This has everything T-Bone recorded from 1951 back. The major downside(if there is one) is that it ends abruptly in 1951 in the middle of his tenure with Imperial. He was with that label from 1950 through 1954, and this collection has the first half(or so) of that output. There is no real reason to end it here when this could have been a 5-CD set including all the Imperial material. His entire Imperial output is available on an excellent 2-CD set, but the first disk, and the first couple of songs on the second disk of that set overlap with the last disk and the end of the third ... This is one of my old favorite blues albums now on CD with sound worthy of current standards.

This is a blues jam, not a tight selections of songs. Nice bluesy guitar, rippling piano, harmonica and sax solos show up, some being very memorable and enjoyable. Big Joe sounds a bit tired or bored, but still brings that KC groove to the proceedings. T-Bone is in good form here, before his performing went downhill from health problems.

Great to listen to in the morning, or slow afternoons in the car.

Of special note, something about the simple blues song "Here Am I Broken Hearted", where something about Big Joe and T-Bone together make it a song that often comes to mind at those certain times when you "have the blues". Good sax, too.

A good collection of individuals ... Read More

If you dig T-bone, don't pass on this cd. The great guitarist is in fine form on this very enjoyable late 60s release. To start off, T-bone introduces himself while tickling the ivories then segues into a spirited, funky rendition of Everyday I have The Blues. This is followed by another great performance of Woman You Must Be Crazy. The rest of the album maintains an upbeat pace with plenty of funky grooves. As a bonus, the session was well recorded.
