For years I have been looking for a re entry point into the metal scene and for the most part the filth and violence, I can get that for free on television, that form the themes of too many albums has been off putting.
I came across Dream Theater at the suggestion of Amazon and then had Paradise Lost presented, the 30 second limit on previews not withstanding, I purchased the album and have been very pleased with that purchase. The idea of a theme album for me goes way back to Rick Wakeman and this albums inspiration taken from Milton's work just add to its great appeal to those with literary sensibilities.

The guitarwork is blistering and the drumming thunderous. Unless you are craving sleaze you should enjoy this album. Its great there is a section of the industry for people who, ... Read More

Many consider Symphony X's latest release, Paradise Lost, the band's heaviest to date. As heavy as it is, I believe the people who say so are slightly mistaken. It is the SECOND-heaviest Symphony X album to date.

The Odyssey, from it's first moment, contains more of Allen's raspy vocals (vs. his cleaner singing), more curb-stomping riffs, and even a few classic thrash elements (The Turning, Incantations of the Apprentice). If you're more into Symphony X's traditional keyboard/guitar trading solos and ballads, you're better off with V.

The heavily-syncopated two-note riff contained on King of Terrors is the most brutal sound I've heard in my entire life. That and the 13-time riff on Wicked beat anything Becoming the Archetype, Dream Theater, Into Eternity, or Opeth has ever put ... Read More

This album is considered by many to be their most ambitious most powerful, and overall their most impressive. It was indeed an album that I sought out to buy, and was not disappointed in the least. However is it really worth five stars? If you're a fan of Symphony X, than you might agree that rther than heavy, this is a release of melodic proportions! To the fan that is just getting introduced to the band, while it is a good album, in my opinion it doesn't do justice as to how much more versatility this band has. I present to you my review of V: the New Mythology Suite.

1. Prelude - The classic beginning to a Symphony X album. The classical undertone is something we've all come to expect and while this one is somehwhat shorter than their others, it still does the job. 4/5

This is a damn fine album here. It is the bands first album with Russell Allen, their current singer. The album has cool guitar riffs and solos, nice basslines, good vocals, and of course nice melodies from the keys.

While this is far from my favorite by these guys, its still a damn good album.

I'm not going to go into attempts to sell potential new fans on Symphony X. Its your loss if you dont check them out.

There isn't a weak song on this album. The two ballads, The Accolade and Candelight Fantasia are classics of beautiful melodies. I play those two tracks, the title track 'The Divine Wings of Tragedy', and Eyes of the Medusa the most. 'The Divine Wings of Tragedy' changes pace artfully with driving beats and serene vocal movements. Eyes of the Medusa uses key changes maybe a little more unusual to the band. That said, of great importance is the fact THIS BAND CHANGES KEY. Both have been concert favorites, but so are the first three tracks on the album. They are consistently voted among the most favorite by fans. So that leaves the Pharoah and the Witching hour. They complete an album that is consistant in high quality with the most 'dance worthy' choruses. Of course, what makes some of the concepts I have written about here is an ... Read More

I can't say enough good things about this CD. It has everything that makes SmypnohyX stand out above the crowd....incredible song writing, virtuoso musicianship and unmatched vocals. This has been my favorite SymX CD all the way to Paradise Lost which is totally different but equally as stunning. You won't go wrong buying this CD, it's a classic.

I think some of the other reviewers were unfair in how they reviewed this album - especially those that approached it after hearing some of the later Symphony X offerings first. Now, I'm not coming on here as the die-hard down-from-the-start toolbar fan, because this wasn't my first Symphony X album, either. However, I think that it is an incredible debut. Although it lacks some of the sophistication and quality of later releases, it is still a thoroughly complex and masterful Symphony X album.

The first thing that has to be said is that the sound quality is extremely lacking on this album. The other thing is that, yes, Russell Allen isn't the vocalist on this album. However, I don't think the vocalist is as bad as what other poeple were saying. He's got a pretty solid voice - not quite as powerful as Allen's, but still works ... Read More

I do like this album. They basically play all of V, and a few songs from Divine Wings and Twilight live.

I dont care for the mix on this though, hence not getting 5 stars. The drums are kinda up in the mix and guitars and too quiet. Thats just my taste though, others may prefer that.

I'm not going to go into attempts to sell potential new fans on Symphony X. Its your loss if you dont check them out.
