The sumptuous tone that characterises Joshua Bell's CD provides what promises to be a brilliant listening experience. But for me there is a very fine line between sensitivity and sentimentality and too often he slithers over into unlovely swoops and slurs. Lush lyricism or sloppy sentiment? I don't think I will be listening to this CD very often but I will buy his interpretation of Tchaikovsky's Violin concerto which is a wonderful test of sensitivity v. sentimentality and see whether he will let the great composer speak.

Choral music by the Cambridge Singers is always top-notch. An older album that might have sounded better with newer technology but no complaints. Has great vocals and orchestral support.

We own all three Aria CD's and much prefer Aria 3. The balance of instrumental and vocals is much better than in the first two. The vocals are wonderful and the instrumentals complement better than in 1 and 2. There is also more variety on 3.

Music : Christmas Day in the Morning
These yuletide favorites have a lot going for them. The title song is a rendition of "I saw 3 ships" that is great. I like John Rutter's version of this carol much, much more than the "traditional" one you always hear each holiday season. Also, who cannot melt over the beautiful "Mary's Lullaby"? That one makes me cry each time I hear it. I will probably buy the sheet music version if I can find it. It would be a great one to perform as a musical number in church during the holidays.

I also enjoy their rendition of "Go Tell it on the Mountain". It is well done, not quite the way Americans are used to hearing it, but done with style, grace and great musicality. This album has lots of gems. I believe it is out of print, which is very, very sad.

Perhaps I have been unlucky and acquired a CD not typical of the Chandos production quality but my copy is dreadful. The second movement of the B flat Sextet sounds like La Folia being played in the deep end of a swimming pool.

Not good at all. The unda maris affects aside, the performers seem to do well with what, by Brahms's standards, is rather indifferent material more in the vein of Louis Spohr than the mature Johannes Brahms.

Simply put, Klaus Thunemann is the finest living Bassoonist. His flawless technique and well conceived
ornamentation is evident is this magnificent recording. If Mozart were alive he would rate this as five stars
plus. Add to this Karl Leister's beautiful tone and clarity in the Clarinet Concerto, and you have one
fantastic CD. Absolutely the finest coupling of both concertos ever done.

I can't recommend this recording more strongly, primarily because of the surprisingly exquisite Raff octet, which commands center stage on this CD over it's oft-performed companion. The Mendelssohn, while good, is a throwaway on this CD. You can get recordings of this work for a dime a dozen, and much better than the performance found here.
This is, as far as I know, the only recording of the Raff octet available on CD. After hearing it, I sincerely hope that one day I am able to choose from dozens of similar recordings. Not that the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-fields chamber ensemble gives a less than superb reading of the work, but there's not much to compare it with, you know.
It has been said that Joachim Raff is the most extreme example of neglected genius in history. This CD makes ... Read More

Seriously. i did grow up with the cassette version as a child. My mom LOVED John Rutter's Requiem and even though i was 4 or 5 years old i loved it too. Everytime I'd want to hear it in the car or in the house i'd say "Mom, can we listen to the 'Jesus Music'?" (I had NO i dea what his name was until i was a little older) I haven't been able to find it on CD until now. It is TRULY exciting that a little treasure of my child hood is now easily accessible...and cheap too! ^_^ THANK YOU AMAZON.COM!
