Andrew Parrott conducts the Taverner Consort and Players is a very affordable set of discs that allow everyone to experience the 'non-choral' choral Bach. Instead of the usual chorus (even the pared down choruses of 16 - 30 members the way most 'authentic' performances use) the works are assigned to one person per part. The result is light, airy, transparent, and very lovely Bach.

Case in point: for the Magnificat 'for 5 voices, 5-part chorus, orchestra & continuo' in D major, Parrott conducts or rather inspires Emily van Evera, Evelyn Tubb, Taverner Consort and Players, Howard Crook, Caroline Trevor, Simon Grant in a new way to hear this gracious work. That Bach can be interpreted in so many ways gives credence to his importance in musical history. This performance, as ... Read More

Mozart - Idomeneo / Rolfe Johnson · von Otter · Martinpelto · McNair · N. Robson · Winslade · EBS · Gardiner is a wonderful recording with the amazing conductor John Eliot Gardiner and the accomplished English Baroque Soloists playing on authentic instruments. There are so many good singers on this recording but if I have to pick on then I will say that Anne Soffie Von Otter is truly outstanding. Deutsche Grammophon has certainly not skimped on the book-let. The book-let is quite thick (167 pages) and cotains the entire lyrics of the opera. It also has a very well-written essay by Gardiner and many fine photographs. I gave this recording 5 well deserved stars.

Benvenuto Cellini was one of the Italian Renaissance/Baroque's most dashing figures, so it's hardly surprising that sooner or later he would end up on the stage. Berlioz created a symphonic work inspired by his autobiography and in 1924, Cellini's autobiography was greatly sanitized, expurgated and freely adapted by Edwin Justus Mayer into a hit Broadway sex farce, THE FIREBRAND, starring Frank Morgan (THE WIZARD OF OZ) as a rather bumbling, philandering version of The Duke of Florence and Joseph Schildkraut as Cellini. The play became a hit film in 1934 with Morgan receiving an Oscar nomination for recreating his Broadway role and Frederic March as Cellini. Given its distinguished pedigree, there were high hopes for THE FIREBRAND OF FLORENCE. Its esteemed creators (Moss Hart, Kurt Weill, Ira Gershwin) ... Read More

The previous reviewer refers to a cast of British singers in this performance. In fact, Christine Brewer, Susan Graham and William Burden are all Americans. Ms. Brewer is a dramatic soprano, and as such may sound "mature" to some ears. Hers is certainly a larger voice than we have tended to hear previously in the title role of Barber's "Vanessa." Eleanor Steber, who created the role (after Maria Callas and Sena Jurinac turned it down) had a lighter voice, but Ms. Brewer's sound is gorgeous. Otherwise, I agree with the previous reviewer's positive comments about this performance.

EXCELLENT PORTRAYAL OF THOMAS MANN'S NOVELLA

Britten said of this opera: "It's either the best or the worst music I've ever written." I don't know if it's the best but it is great music and certainly worth the listening time which is close to 3 hours.

Although this opera portrays the passion of Aschenbach (a writer experiencing writer's block) moving thru stages of 'confusion' and the 'stripping of dignity'; it is more about the right of the individual to express himself, both artistically and in love. It should be their right to do so without censure. It provided for Britten the opportunity to create a role of a mature man for his life companion and muse,Peter Pears.

I would strongly suggest that you first read the novella by Thomas Mann upon which this opera is based. Your ... Read More

When I purchased this 5-disc set by Andrew Parrot, I had failed to notice that this recording is at the minimum-setting of Bach recordings. No choir, but one individual voice per vocal part. Now normally, I like a nice big full choir sound, so before listening I had some doubts as to this recording would appeal to me.
Well, I must say, now that I've listened to it a couple of times, it's really a wonderfully pure effect, and I really DO like it. The sound isn't bleak at all, and at times the four interacting voices do sound like a small choir. I really do not know what Bach's original intentions were, but this recording is really a joy to listen to, and that's what counts most for me.
