"Quando m'en vo" is not omitted from this CD; it is just called "Musetta's waltz song." It is the same aria.

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa was never between my favourite singers but I have to admit that she is really a respectable artist and this lovely cd proves how versatile she is and how she managed to keep a fresh and mellow tone even in her fifties. She is really at her best in the extracts from Citizen Kane and the operetta The Enchanteress. It's a pity that no Verdi music is included in the program, Kiri Te Kanawa was a great Amelia (Simon Boccanegra) and a moving Desdemona. A very fine Dame Kiri indeed.

These recordings can withstand comparison with the very best. These consistently idiomatic readings will provide many hours of pleasurable listening. A Sea Symphony is a wonderful, moving work, capable of stirring the listener profoundly when given a performance of the conviction evident here. All the works in this set are finely played, faithfully and understandingly conducted and both are recorded in excellent, well-balanced sound. If you like Vaughan Williams I also recommend tracking down The Lark Ascending and The Pilgrim's Progress.

This disc is a great introduction to the shorter choral works of Finzi, Britten, and Holst. The two major works on the disc--Finzi's "Requiem da Camera" and Britten's "Cantata misericordium"--deserve many more performances than they normally receive. The third movement of the Requiem, "Only a man harrowing clods," in particular, is quite haunting. The Holst Psalm-settings are inventive as well. The performances are first-rate, as is the recording--the singing is quite clear and distinct, perhaps as a result of the small numbers of the Britten Singers. The soloists do an excellent job, and are well-teamed in the Cantata.

This CD is a fine example of soulless marketing, bleeding hunks variety. For those of you who like opera, get a real opera. Good performances of "La boheme" are easy to find. For those of you who like a particular singer or conductor, seek out that person's work. For those of you who want an introduction to opera or to top-flight singing, go elsewhere, there's plenty of good stuff to be found. For those of you who want a genuine freak show, step right up, this is for you. Nowhere else are you likely to find both Andrea Bocelli and Herbert von Karajan on the same disk!
