I don't know opera. Last summer we had an incredible 20th anniversary trip to Italy. As a side trip from Venice, we planned a night in Verona. Neither my wife or I had been to an opera. Is this how its supposed to be... ...an incredible star filled night with a three quarter moon, the largest stage and outdoor theatrical production on the planet, all taking place in a roman colleseum (arena) built in 180 a.d., an incredible colorful set and production with a full symphony orchestra and voices that don't come easy. A terrific album by a great singer. This album represents the considerable territory that Kiri Te Kanawa covers in here repertoire. She moves easily from Handel to Puccini to Jerome Kern. The insertion of classic show tunes as a part of this CD is a nice little plus. Some opera stars absolutely kill popular music by overwhelming it with operatic technique (listen to Richard Tucker singing "What now my love"; this is a pleasant little tune, but it can't stand up to Tucker's voice of steel, using all the power at his command). Te Kanawa sings these songs, for the most part, nicely and does not overpower them with operatic conventions. She does a wonderful job on Handel's "Let the bright seraphim," displaying good coloratura technique, as a matter of fact. This cut nicely illustrates ... Read More

I have been a fan of classical music for 15 years, but have had little success finding opera I enjoy. This CD is all opera, and I have enjoyed every song.

The original CD release of this collection of Verdi & Puccini arias was a major disappointment. On the CBS label, the sound levels were extremely low, and the depth of the sound field extremely limited. Recorded at a time when Te Kanawa's voice was at it's most glorious, and popularised by the use of two of the Puccini arias in the Merchant Ivory film "Room with a View" (Chi il bel sogno di Doretta (La Rondine) & O mio babbino caro (Gianni Schicchi))the CD release was a major disappointment. Sony have thankfully righted this wrong, and with the use of their proprietory Direct Stream Digital (DSD) remastering, the result is a massive improvement. In addition, as the original CD was a bit on the short side, they have included 5 welcome bonus tracks to bring the total time of the disc to a reasonable 69.13 ... Read More

This is a recital to savour; Von Stade's voice was at its freshest but she was already an experienced singer and particularly at ease with the French language, having already lived in France and learned fluent French over some years. There is a special plangency and beauty to her tone and those excursions into her lower register are heart-stopping. Other reviewers remark upon a certain lack of depth in her interpretation of the text; I do not share these reservations and, in any case, the musicality, ease of production and clarity of enunciation carry the day for me. It is such a lovely, mellow, mezzo voice that one can listen to the whole recital without tiring of it, whereas sometimes over an hour of singing a soprano can become too glaring on the ear. Joan Sutherland is beyong doubt one of the greatest, if not the greatest voice I've ever heard. Her voice is so pure, perfect pitch, makes the hairs stand up on the back on your neck. All three of her CD's, which I bought to replace the old LP's I have. Worth every penny. I was lucky enough to see her live on many ocassions. Magnificent voice!!

If you like music from the "verismo" period you will not be disappointed. Perfect for much of this genre, Scotto is able to communicate emotion, strength, and vulnerability with great vocal control. "Flammen perdonami" from Lodoletta by Mascagni is a fine example. Sometimes their is some ugliness in her voice, though, and this lets Scotto down, for example, in the showpiece from La Rondine. Also the final duet from Adriana Lecouvrer ends album rather weakly. The artists should be commended for including so many verismo rarities and overall this is a pretty fine achievement
