Wonderful classical music. The CD is very relaxing and offers a wide variety of favorite classical music. I can't wait to listen to the other "Relaxing" CD's that are available.

Sir Adrian Boult in both the Enigma Variations and the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, what more could anyone ask. How about Sir John Barbiolli in the Cockaigne Overture. With performances like these you can easily forgive the slight lapse in sound quality. I had all 5 Marches scattered on 5 different discs. Now they are all together with some great performances of Elgar masterpieces. At the price, there is no going wrong here.

The selections chosen are, for the most part, to my taste, but the volume is comprised of fewer supurb selections, such as those masterpieces by Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart that were found in Vol. I.

As an overview or introduction to some of Ralph Vaughan Williams most well-known and beloved works--the Tallis Fantasia, the Greensleeves Fantasia, The Lark Ascending--this set from Decca will service most needs. It features an attractive program that, alongside the more popular works, includes some that aren't so universally well-known yet probably deserve to be--namely the Oboe Concerto and the Concerto Grosso.
The problem I have, as someone who has known most of these works for many years, is with the performances. The wonderful, spritely Oboe Concerto is given a dull and quite slow performance that seems to want to bring out pastoral qualities that aren't entirely there (it has its pastoral moments, but it's actually a very vivacious, impish piece). I was quite disappointed when I first ... Read More

Boult was highly underrated. Not a flashy celebrity, but a solid musician in the best possible sense. Like Barbara Stanwyck he was perhaps "not great" but he also "never gave a bad performance". Like Mozart's Susanna says of Cherubino, he did well anything he set his mind to doing. As borne out by his substantial body of recordings, Boult excelled in all music, not just his compatriots (RWV, Elgar and Holst) but also in the mainstream Austro-German/French/Russian concert repertoire as well. Hence no surprise that this is a splendid Wagner collection, beautifully played throughout, and invested knowingly by a master conductor with the proper weight and vitality the music calls for. Thoroughly satisfying in every way and priced dirt cheap, thank you EMI. Not just a superb introduction to orchestral ... Read More

The VW symphonies have done remarkably well on disc. Complete cycles by Previn, Haitink and Tod Handley all make substantial claims. Individual symphonies from Richard Hickox, Andrew Davis, Vaughan Williams himself and, of course, 'Glorious John' Barbirolli (as VW christened him) also demand attention. But, if you're looking for a complete overview of the Vaughan Williams symphonic canon (plus quite a lot of substantial extras) then this Boult set is probably still the best all-round recommendation.

Even he has a substantial rival in his earlier self on Decca, conducted under the gaze of the composer who delivers a touching speech of thanks to the players at the end of the pianissimo finale of the Sixth Symphony. This earlier Decca version probably has the edge for urgency and thrust in the quicker ... Read More

I have been ravenously studying classical music for about the last two years non stop. It has been a fantastic voyage. Out of everything by everyone, to me, this is among the very best CDs. The music is beautiful, mighty and majestic. On top of that, the CD is very inexpensive, considering it's quality.

Boult and RVW go way way back, of course, so he offers authoritative performances just about all the time. Here the Pastoral is the better performance, a lovely and sensitive reading of a very elusive work. The Fifth is a little slack, unfortunately, but if you can accept that it's still a warm and loving rendition.
