From tapes compiled during the early-1990s festivals for musicians at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios, producers Stephen Hague, Karl Wallinger and Gabriel put together an outstanding retrospective from the events.

The list of musicians put the "world" in "World Music," and include Papa Wemba, Billy Cobham, Wobble, Wallinger, Sinead O'Connor and Hukwe Zawose. Gabriel takes the lead vocal role on several tracks, but he is more like a super-glue that brought the artists together to share their styles in a considerably looser atmosphere than typically found in recording sessions.

The U.S. release was facilitated through a venture-capital trust initiative, hence Gabriel (finally) had control over the production and content. This is straight from Gabriel's heart and is ... Read More

During the mid to late eighties I was fortunate enough to have one of my dream jobs when I worked in a record store. For that brief moment in my life I was exposed to so much music and a fair amount of it has stayed with me over the decades since that idyllic period. Such is the case with The Lion and the Cobra from Sinead O'Connor. The vocal range of this gifted singer jumps out at you right away on the haunting opening track Jackie. This album is a hypnotic collection of gothic intensity, sultry acoustic strumming, pulsing beats, and angelic whispers of raw emotion.
I will admit to not following much of her career after this album beyond the inescapable Prince cover and her highly publicized political statements but I can testify that this album is a timeless and powerful collection of passionate, ... Read More

On Sean-Nos Nua, meaning "Old-Style New", O'Connor has taken old Irish favorites and put a new twist on them. These songs, done this way, are striking. O'Connor's voice is amazing. She was MADE for these songs. As strange as it may seem, the Jamaican rhythms she pairs with the Irish ballads, simply work in the most astonishing way. You must hear it to believe it. My favorites are "Peggy Gordon", (which O'Connor says in the liner notes she heard as a lesbian love song which somehow adds poignancy to me.), "My Lagan Love" and "The Moorlough Shore". Enjoy.

I love this record, mostly for her song "Thank You For Hearing Me." This song is so smooth, and I haven't felt boring in listening to. Sinead is always the best for her fans like me though.

If you like Reggae, especially the roots rock reggae of the 1970s, and/or if you like Sinead O'connor then you can not go wrong with this album.

If you like roots rock reggae but have no interest in Sinead O'Connor then you will probably still like it and end up liking her.

If you like Sinead O'Connor but dislike Reggae, then this is not the album for you because it is the real thing.

Sinead went to Tuff Gong Records in Jamaica to record this with Sly and Robbie and many more masters of Reggae. I have been a big fan of Roots Rock Reggae for over 10 years now and this is one of my all time favorite Reggae albums. Highly Recommended.

This album is an interesting mix of emotions, artistic biography and exploration. Sinead returns to her Irish roots and develops an interesting atmosphere in the song "The Lamb's Book of Life". In this song she explores themes of migration, national division and disenfranchisement present in Irish society. The track "Emma's song" takes on an altogether different tone, beginning with the soft tinkling of piano keys culminating in a beautiful medley of pipes and strings. Some other tracks are "hate-them-or-love-them tracks" such as "Daddy I'm Fine" (I love it), while others are rather uneventful (i.e. "Dancing Lessons"). Overall, the album was thoughtful and fluid.

Top Track: Emma's Song

For those who are looking for something more than the typically trite "christian" music, this will feed your need. Deeply spiritual, moving, and more "faith-filled" than all the syrupy crap I find at the christian book store.

Veronica Guerin - I saw the movie first... It was a riveting account of a true story. The artist, Harry Gregson-Williams, along with Sinead O'Connor, rendered a powerfully moving accompaniment to this movie.

I am a collector of movie soundtracks. My resources for the acquisition of soundtracks include the usage of many music libraries. Soundtracks in general are particularly difficult to acquire. If you don't look for them within the first few weeks of the actual movie release, chances are that you'll be unsuccessful at finding a selection at all. This is not so with Amazon Music. I can usually count on finding what I want at Amazon Music. This includes the accompanying artwork. Thank You Amazon
