The fifth studio album from Iceland's supremely inventive dreamscapists is their poppiest outing to date.
A happy album from Sigur Rós sounds like an unlikely concept.
The band specialise in music that is about as sunny as an Arctic winter - vast tundras of sound, dark with melancholy and loneliness. So their fifth album comes as a surprise.
The brisk opener, "Gobbledigook", all jumped-up drums and manic vocals, sets the tone: its poppy energy crackles on through much of this collection.
But then along comes a song that changes everything. From innocuous beginnings - Jónsi Birgisson's fragile voice, a lone piano - "Ára Bátur" swells into an epic, swallowing a whole choir and the London Sinfonietta.
It is so ambitious and successful a piece of music that ... Read More

This is the first Sigur Ros album I bought and I can personally attest it is a good album. There is Hoppipolla, a truly fine song and the closest thing to a hit song the Icelandic band ever had (it is very familiar as it has appeared on tv shows, etc.). The rest is basically ambiance music, sad but haunting. If you are feeling depressed because your longtime girlfriend has left you, listening to this record on a rainy day while commiserating on your fate seems like a natural thing to do.

The Icelandic band Sigur Ros, by this point in their career, have redefined and expanded their sound enough times to completely avoid categorization. Are they rock? Are they ambient? Or are they simply some breed of sophisticated pop? The only thing for certain is that Sigur Ros aren't afraid of being themselves, and have an awe-inspiring artistic freedom. Throughout this sprawling sophomore album, Sigur Ros created possibly their most accessible and simultaneously memorable album of their careers. The strategy utilized on Ágætis Byrjun is the same that was used on Von and would be used on future albums () and Takk. That strategy is simple. More means more. Which is ironic, because the opening introduction track is exactly the melody that the listener would want expanded on to about five minutes. This ... Read More

I was first introduced to this group by the brilliant final scene in the movie, "Vanilla Sky," where the main character makes the decision to "jump" back into the real imperfect world from his taintedly-perfectly-fake-dreamworld he had been living in, and track 4 (my favorite) plays as it shows seemingly-misc flashbacks from humanity's past as he bails downwards off of a skyscraper heading like a missle for the concrete below, hell every time I see that scene I break down in tears. But that's what this album is, tear-therapy, if you want to examine the emotions within you beneath the surface and feel that you need a good cry, put on this cd. I might venture so far as to say it's especially therapuetic for survivors of abuse or those with PTSD, people deciding to or having already quit the government's drugs, and that ... Read More

Sigur Ros has been very busy lately (the last 2 years). After touring endlessly beyond the Takk album around the world, they toured their native Iceland and recorded the experience for a DVD "Heima", which was released last Fall. Just about the same time, Sigur Ros released this collection as well.

Hvarf/Heim (2 CDS; 11 tracks; 73 min.) consists of seemingly 2 completely separate CDs. On "Hvarf" (5 tracks; 37 min.) the band went looking into the archives and came up with tracks scattering from 1995 to 2002. The best in the bunch are "Hljomalind," which sounds like it could've been an outtake from "Takk", even though it was recorded in 1999, and the 9+ min. "Von" (recorded in 1995), as lush yet introspective as anything as the band has done. "Heim" (6 tracks, 36 min.) brings tracks from that Iceland tour in 2006, ... Read More

Mostly this album is an overblown dark ambient hodgepodge of genre fittings, but occasionally the brilliance that would become this band comes through. Their debut is perhaps the only album where Sigur Ros could actually be heard sounding like something else (quintessential shoegazers Slowdive come to mind) and the only album in their respected discography not needed to date.

To be honest, it wasn't what I expected, but I still enjoyed the video, because it brought situations that are affecting young adults to the forefront, so I applaud Sigur Ros. Though I wouldn't classify this as a complete CD, just a few pieces of some great work perfectly orchestrated together.
As for all the criticism on the video Viõrar Vel Til Loftárasa, I personally feel like this video was releasing that part of life that was troubling someone for a long time. The crying out inside of the bitter memories, entangled in the joy and in the happiness that his surroundings condemned. This is seen not only by the father figure in the video, but the Rev., and the bible, the people at the game, and praying before hand, also the fish representing the so-called proper behavior that is accepted, right at the tossing of the dolls. I've read several of the reviews here that both liked and did not like this album, but there was one thing in common with ALL of them... No one seemed to know the origins of the album. In the case of Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do, that is the single most important thing in understanding/appreciating the music. CONTEXT.

American choreographer Merce Cunningham made a dance piece / ballet entitled "Split Sides." The idea was that there were two lighting arrangements, two soundtracks, two of everything that could be interchanged from one half of the show to the other. He got Sigur Ros to write half of the music (Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do), and he got Radiohead to write the other half (music they chose not to release). The music was a collaborative effort with cunningham and his choreography, so it follows a logical progression, much like the build-up in (), ... Read More
