I have more experience with other genres of music, but am interested in basically all kinds. I have been collecting CDs for nearly 2 decades but had no Opera in my collection. I did a little research and arrived at a conclusion. If I wanted the most and best Opera music for my money, I had to get this title, which is a double album, and "The Most Famous Opera Duets". Well, the latter was a steal with a list price under four dollars, and the former was a truly good compilation of many uplifting, diverse, impactful, and pleasant pieces. I am satisfied with my purchases and have filled the gap in my music collection. I can't see Opera getting better than this and the other title I mentioned. Enjoy!

"Quando m'en vo" is not omitted from this CD; it is just called "Musetta's waltz song." It is the same aria.

My mother, who never saw an opera in her life, had the London LP "Highlights" version of this performance. Each time she played it, she cried unashamedly. I have seen 4 Butterfly's performed live. None matches this recording for its sheer power. Brava, Renata, brava.

If you want to get a complete opera, this CD isn't for you, but it is an excellent compilation of different opera arias from various composers, most of which are Italian. Some highlights are "Vient, Diletto" and "Ah Mes Amis".

This can't get any better! The angelic voice of Renata Tebaldi is breathtaking. Del Monaco is wonderful and so is Fioravanti as Michonnet. I was surprised to hear such magnificent sound in an older recording. It beats the newer recording with Scotto, Domingo and Milnes. I am so happy to have bought this fine verismo opera with the greatest singers. Everyone should have this in his opera library.

Even the Gramophone, usually on Tebaldi's side no matter what, found her a bit stately and overpowering as the fragile Mimi, and the aged Serafin's conducting earned adjectives like "indulgent," and "a touch arthritic." None of these reservations are reflected in the five-star brigade at Amazon, where runaway enthusiasm trumps criticism. At the current super-bargain price from Amazon Marketplace, no one will be out of pocket trying this 1959 remake of Tebaldi's 1950 mono account under Erede -- Decca has both in print. Listening to the two side by side, I was struck by how natural and unforced the young Tebaldi was in her vocal acting. I bought that 2-CD set only for the extraordinary performance of Adele's "Laughing Song" ("Mein Herr Marquis") by Edita Gruberova. It is highly surprising (and inexcusable IMO) that a great label as Universal/Decca wrongly gives it to Kiri Te Kanawa, and that another great company (amazon) relays that big error on this site; the recording is quite recognizable (Gruberova can't be confused with anyone; and at her final, you can't confuse the particular audience of that live performance unable to refrain from blowing their stunning and applause before end), and you can check J. Strauss - Die Fledermaus / Te Kanawa, Gruberova, Fassbaender, Bär, Wiener Philharmoniker, Previn and search it, 1st for "Gruberova", 2nd for "Kanawa".
