I heard this CD on a PBS pledge drive (it was a premium) and found myself loving every cut on it! I was in my car and just wanted to keep on driving and listening. This is by far my most-played CD - I've had to make it a weekend only listen to prevent getting burned out on it. HIGHLY recommend it. Even if you are unfamiliar with some of the pieces, you will quickly learn to love them. . . . I must end this review - I'm off to listen to the "flower duet" for the 100th time. . .

When you compare Freni with the light roles that she used to sing in the 60s and this Freni, you will think they are two different singers. But what is truly amazed is the fact that not only her voice changed, but she became bar none to one the hardest heavy lyric soprano roles ever: Mimi. And when she has Pavarotti next to her, it is like heaven. But, wait... Who is conducting is Karajan, unarguably one of the best puccinian ever. This is a record to listen, re-listen, re-listen, re-listen until I don't know when...

you don't have to be an opera lover to love this album. Pavarotti 's golden voice is at its best in this recording of Puccini's wonderful opera.
I listen to this CD constantly and never tire of it. If you are hoping to convert someone to an opera fan, this is the recording to do it.

Although I grew up with many of M.Callas recordings, it wasn't until very recently that I listened in full to her Mimi, a role she never sang onstage, unfortunately, and only learned for this recording. There are many really wonderful recordings and performances of this popular opera and of this sweet and touching character, the tragic seamstress who falls in love with the poet Rodolpho, one of Puccini's most endearing characters, Mimi.
In the last act, as Mimi is fading and her voice lovingly speaks to her friends gathered around her, I found myself weeping just by the sheer sweetness and love Callas had found to express this endearing character.
She got me! Who would have known that this great singing actress who had sung Wagner, Bellini, Verdi, great dramatic roles around the ... Read More

This "Trovatore" was recorded in 1956, and has enjoyed pretty much of a "clasic" status for a long time. Some of it is very, very good indeed. Herbert von Karajan performed this opera a lot (most famously, in Salzburg in 1962, with the super-star cast comprising Leontyne Price, Franco Corelli, Giulietta Simionato and Ettore Bastianini --- and yes, there's an avilable recording, and it's spectacular!), and his particular way with Verdi's fiery score is certainly impressive. On this particular recording, he has four great singers certainly, but somehow this recording has never been, for me anyway, all THAT unforgettable. The assets: Maria Callas brings out all the darkness and mystery of Leonora. She is by far the most compelling and vivid exponent of this role. That said, it must also be noted that this role ... Now that this is available in the lower-priced brown-wrapped version (shades of an old LP or even 78 sleeve), expect no less in this superb recording. The only sacrifice is the lack of a libretto -- but that's available from EMI at its website. And at this incredibly low price of about $14 (same as the Gobbi-Callas TOSCA) everything that counts is still there -- in spades.

Music : Donizetti: Lucia di Lammermoor / Callas, di Stefano, Panerai, Zaccaria; Karajan
This is the best performance I have ever heard of any opera together with Rossini's L'Assedio di Corinto, with Beverly Sills, live from La Scala 1969. Lucia di Lammermoor in the live version with Karajan in Berlin is nothing but a wonder. All sings as this was their lives last possibility to perform an opera and they give all they possibly can. My God, what intency and verve! Its very moving indeed to read in a biography of Callas that she - after this performance - went to her hotel room and in her loneliness cried, as she thought she had failed. She most certainly had not. She had made a miracle come through.
