This work is the last of the strictly minimalistic compositions by Philip Glass and in my opinion his best. The re-recording successfully addresses some issues the first version had, and at the same time creates new. The overall sound is a bit darker and more romantic, which makes it easier to listen to, while not sacrificing the minimalist feel. Aside from production, the choir is at another level compared to the other recording. The incredibly fast ending (Spaceship) is unlike anything minimalism has produced, intense and powerful. Some argue that this version is dull - no, it just makes some passages emotionally colored, be it romantic or theatrical. But, there are some drawbacks. The beginning of the Trial had a wonderful interplay between Johnson, whose replacement doesn't have such a ... Read More

I have had this CD for many years. It is one of the most beautiful renditions of American songs that I have ever heard. You can't get this CD anymore, at least not here.

Robert White does a masterful job with the poetic nuances of these songs. This is a fantastic collection of songs, and superb renditions. Kudos to all involved, esp. Mr. White. I am so happy to have purchased this CD.

I've listened to this recording many times, and never tire of it. The subtly retuned piano sounds sweeter every time I hear it. Alternately grand and intimate, lyrical and dissonant (mostly lyrical), this is a very special work.

Another reviewer here commented that the ensemble sound is "somewhat distant." I agree. The other available recording of the work, by Joanna MacGregor with the Sydney Symphony, corrects this. Harrison fans will want to have both disks. But here with Keith Jarrett, who commissioned the work, is the place to start.

This CD is only average as a whole. It's selection of music includes most of the great traditionally American anthems and songs, but totally ignores others. The music was mostly too loud to my ears also, and I did not like the modernist renditions of some of them. "America The Beautiful" in particular was far too heavy handed and operatic to be enjoyable. Also, just so you know -- there are a total of 18 songs on this CD; I don't know why Amazon only lists 5.
