This is an excellent CD to introduce children to some of the more familiar operas. I would highly recommend this CD for children and also for adults who want to become familiar with opera.

I'm not opera literate, so I was looking for some kind of introduction that had some familiar arias and that would connect me to others that I had not heard. I liked that the notes with the cd indicated where a new listener may have heard some of the music (in a commercial, during an important scene in a movie, etc). This was the source of a lot of 'Ah ha!' moments. It even inspired me to rent a dvd of a live version of Turandot and to put others on my Netflix queue. I owe my newly aroused curiosity about opera, believe it or not, to Il Divo. I had to know what these guys sing when they're not reinterpreting pop songs. I'm glad I started this journey and this cd was a good start.

Everything about this recording is sensational, even the voice one might question at first hearing turns out to win you over. It's a rare occurrence, when every aspect of an opera comes together on disc, but it happens here - to the max!

The recorded sound is brilliant, as is the sweeping, driving force of the orchestra under conductor, Colin Davis. The singers are sublime, one of the finest ensembles opera has to offer. This dazzling recording rushes in, delights, then rushes off, as though you'd dreamed its presence . Even the chorus acts (a key ingredient for a great opera recording).

I've had the LP for years and now I have it on CD. Where many LP recordings struggle to make a successful transition, this one rules!!!

I have listened to many of the other catalogue recordings of this opera and this recording leaves them in it's shadow. The orchestral playing and conducting are a revelation. However, as the other reviewers have said the vocal talent is breathtaking. Corelli is a 'force of nature'. He portrays Faust as a tortured man. Sutherland is a stupendous Marguerite and Ghairov is a herculean Mephistopheles.

A perfect recording in orchestral and vocal terms. OK, if you want gallic accents it may be less than ideal but then so are the other recordings around. Indeed, the only other recording I would find acceptable after this one is the English National opera's set, which translates brilliantly to English.

Wonderful stuff.

Thais is much more than a vehicle for sopranos of a certain age to get in touch with--or attempt to put us in touch with-- their sluttish sides. And this issue is much more than just a budget starter-set of Massenet's take on Anatole France's regenerated courtesan. The sound may not be up to the best of late 1950's studio hi-fi, but it is high quality contemporary broadcast sound--no scratchy high ends, voices well centered.

Andrée Esposito has a full, brilliant, steady, expressive and quite lovely voice. Too bad her discography is so brief. (...). The more familiar Robert Massard is excellent as Athanael. This is altogether a fine performance of a comfortably melodic classic.

7.Bizet: Le docteur Miracle from: Opera D'oro

Music : Bizet: Le docteur Miracle
This is a decent recording, for the most part, and there is no other commercially available Docteur Miracle out there, so it's a good bet. The score is frothy and delightful, well orchestrated, and easy on the ears. Don't miss the Omlet Quartet, which is a funny and winning number if there ever was one.

If you're looking for obscure operas, you probably already know the pluses and minuses of opera d'oro recordings. They usually sound like they're recorded from inside a trenchcoat, but they're about a quarter of the price of studio recordings. This is a broadcast recording from the seventies, so the quality is pretty good, although in several places, it becomes inexplicably very very poor. It's almost as though they took out all the treble in some spots just to remind you that you only paid $9 for it. ... Read More

I remember first being intrested in classical music when I was about fifteen. I didn't know much about it but knew that I wanted to know more, wanted to be able to tell the difference between Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, etc. So I went to the local mall and walked out of Musicland with this collection on tape for something like 3 bucks. What a deal! I know a lot more about classical music now, but I still own this on tape and just ordered it on CD. Not only is the collection incredibly well balanced, but it also features some of the best performances I've yet to find for each of the pieces included. Now that I'm older I think I'll invest in all 12 or more volumes of this series, and at 4 bucks a CD, I won't go broke doing it! A great, great series!
