I typed "Billy Elliot Broadway Cast Recording" into Amazon's search field, and this album was the one that came up. But this is not the Broadway, but the London Original Cast. The cast list and the reviews going back to 2006 confirm it. Unless the product has been changed, and this IS the Broadway Cast Recording (and it's unusual for one to come out so quickly after a show opens), and something as odd as Amazon just using the London recording's descriptions and reviews is going on. I love this show, but would like it if buyers knew what they were getting. (Amazon should make it clear in the description.)

Schumann, Handel, Haydn, Telemann: Concertos for Four Horns

I remember this CD when it was released a few years back, but did not give it serious consideration as, firstly, none of the works were concertos and, secondly, the cover photo is of a natural horn, minus mouthpiece, while the horns featured here are modern valve horns. When I stumbled over it again recently and saw the good reviews here I thought I should get it and have a listen.
The performances here are not outstanding, while I am not over familiar with the Schumann, there are numerous orchestras/ensembles that play Handel, Telemann and Haydn far better that those here. In the Haydn there are 4 minutes missing from the adagio, and the last movement marked moderato, rather than the usual moderato molto-presto, ... Read More

Music : Schütz: Christmas Vespers / McCreesh, Gabrieli Consort and Players
First of all, I was enthralled by the singing and the organ sound: very rich and musical in every way. The congregational singing, specifically, is superb, and the CD is worth buying for everything that comes before and after the Christmas Historia.

The historia, though, is an edition that is disconcerting to me. Perhaps I have heard versions that are less "authentic" than this one, but there are enough differences between the McCreesh and other versions I have heard that I must assume others will be affected the same way.

I am a lover of classical music from my earliest days. I play the piano and have played in high school bands and briefly a college ensemble as a bassonist. Just a two Christmases ago I discovered Windhill's Christmas collection and fell in love with the different arrangements that are not traditional. I enjoy the jazz elements that weave through the classical. Music from Windhill requires a musically mature and open mind. Good Stuff!!!

5.Christmas Mass in Rome from: Polygram Records

Music : Christmas Mass in Rome
This is one the very best Gabrieli consort discs and almost impossible to get hold of. If you get an opportunity grab it and make a back up. The Palestrina on the disc is mind-blowing. A totally McCreeshian take on a usually serenely, gently sung composer. The performance is polar opposite to for example, the sublime Pro Cantione Antiqua discs. In particular the Kyrie, Gloria and Credo are breathtaking, the rest of the mass, still brilliant is less impressive. McCreesh succeeds in making Palestrina not just beautiful, but exciting. The plainchant on the disc is of the very best sort that McCreesh can produce, with perfect acoustics. The Victoria motets are truly magnificent and compete with Palestrina's mass. The canzone are not particularly brilliant, nor are the motets at the end of the mass. Well ... Read More

This recording was made only a year before La Fenice's "Giovanni Gabrieli: In Festo Sanctissimae Trinitatis". Thus for one year it was probably the best CD of Gabrieli on the market. It's still an attractive performance, with some tracks that are luscious and a few that are lumpy. I'll try to explain why I prefer the sounds of La Fenice.

Like "In Festo S. Trinitatis", this performance is a composite of Gabrieli sonatas, toccatas, and Latin-texted motets, arranged as they might have been heard in the church of San Rocco in Venice, on the saint's feast day. This is surely the right concept for performing Gabrieli for modern listeners, combining solemn majesty with instrumental fireworks. Soloists Robert Harre-Jones, Robin Blaze, Donald Grieg, Charles Pott and others, familiar to Early Music ... Read More

We picked this up after sampling several of the cuts here at Amazon. We were interested in a way to introduce our 1+/- year old to classical music and add to our drive and naptime repertoire. We couldn't be happier with this CD. The variations reflect the enormous talent and creativity of those arranging and performing on the CD and underscore how timeless music can be! If you like Classical, Jazz, NewAge or Eclectic, this will fit well in your collection!

For almost half a century George Szell's recording of the 4th has been largely considered the finest ever put down. It is an excellent interpretation with exceptional singing from Judith Raskin. And while I own over 30 recordings of the 4th, I always ended up preferring the Szell. One version in particular I found to be a fine alternative, Lorin Maazel's with the Vienna Phil and Kathleen Battle. While Maazel did not bring the piece across with the same complete realization as Szell, the acceptional vocal on the fourth movement always stood out for me as the best ever recorded.

However, one day everything changed for me with regards to the way I enjoy the 4th. It was the day I heard this Michael Tilson Thomas recording. I immediately felt more connected to it than any other. The tempo was perfect ... Read More

This really a fine recording. I bought my copy one sunny Saturday morning in Melbourne in around 1993. I saw it on the shelf and I got my wallet out. I was completely blown away by the music on this disc. Rigatti was a real discovery for me.

The use of high falsettists in the chorus and solos is particularly effective and gives us a real insight into the sounds of music in Venice in the early 17th century.

I cannot recommend this marvellous recording too highly, it is clearly one of the best made by the Gabrieli Consort, Choir & Players.

Great playing from the strings, cornetti and tromboni.

I agree with the other reviewers; Mozart's magic comes through in these skillful adaptations. It's a pleasure to hear them over and over again. Highly recommended as a great "easy listening" CD.
