I love the music from this movie. It has lots of great violin, cello, and orchestral tracks. The soundtrack feels complete with lots of variety and plenty of listening time. Highly recommend!

Distinguished Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Principal Flutist Emmanuel Pahud offers some riveting, joyful performances as soloist in these Vivaldi flute concerti. He's well supported by splendid, virtuoso performances from violinist Richard Tognetti and his Australian Chamber Orchestra; this recording marks their EMI recording debut (Richard Tognetti and his small band may be best remembered to audiences worldwide as the musicians in the soundtrack recording of the film "Master and Commander" for which Tognetti composed some of the music. But they are perhaps best known for their elegantly stylish playing of Baroque music, winning ample praise from critics and fans worldwide.). The Vivaldi concerti represent several different periods from the composer's life; for example, the Opus 10 concerti ... Read More

This is the kind of CD that transcends Classical Music and enters the mainstream as an example of what Classical Guitar can be. You don't have to be a Classical Music aficionado or a classical guitar buff to really appreciate this CD. It is a perfect example of the beauty and universal appeal of the classical guitar.

This is a stupendous CD. Angela Hewitt's glorious and sensitive touch is beautifully matched by the precision and vitality of the ACO. Although some reviewers have decried the performance of Brandenburg No. 5, to me this is a highlight. The solo at the end of the first movement is rivetting.

If I wanted to introduce someone to the glories of Bach, this is the CD I'd play to them. Turn it up loud and rejoice.

Angela Hewitt's two disc traversal of Bach keyboard concertos has received all kinds of critical acclaim, but to my ears this volume does not live up to its high reputation. Angela Hewitt has moved to the front of the pack of Bach players on modern keyboard - she plays very fluidly, & very respectfully. But her gentle, middle of the road approach, while pleasing, seems to lack genuine excitement. I won't say that her playing is bland, but it is certainly predictable. I have Hewitt's set of English Suites, which is more satisfying than the concertos; so I am not completely unsympathetic to her approach to Bach. Perhaps part of the fault here lies with the Australian Chamber Orchestra which sounds thin & uninspired? In any event, I bought the first volume of this set & returned it unopened ... Read More

The reviewer below who speaks of the "behemoth" sound on this CD is living in another world. In fact, this reading of the Shostakovich First Cello Concerto is performed by a chamber orchestra from Australia--the only reduced version I know of--and as a result the brass and woodwind stand out over the smaller string body. In the opening movement the solo cello fights for prominence with the first horn, who plays with a gritty, edgy tone--very gripping.

Peter Wispelwey isn't well known in the U.S. (if at all), but this Dutch virtuoso is the real thing. His phrasinng is more incisive and interesting than, say, Maisky's on DG with Michael Tilson Thomas and the LSO. He is inward wehn called for but can explode at any time. His tone is amplified by the engineers, of course, but it seems to be on a leaner ... Read More

What I have heard until now from this amazing cellist (a live Prokovjev Sinfonia Concertante, and his Poulenc/Debussy/Franck EMI disc) all bespeaks of a truly extraordinary talent, and this disc amply confirms the impression. It easily stands comparison with the much liked version I already owned by Heinrich Schiff (Philips); in fact, I prefer this new recording over the older one on just about every count. In some ways Müller-Schott is a Schiff-like cellist: he eschews empty gestures and slick showmanship, and there is a great humanity to his music-making. What makes him an absolute winner is the astonishing delicacy of his playing, the crispness of articulation, and his affectionate shading of tone color. He is of course playing a wonderful instrument; there isn't even a hint of the nasality that so easily mars ... Read More

Some time back - now rapidly approaching the two-year mark - I attended an Australian Chamber Orchestra concert while they were on tour in the U.S. The printed program was a combination of somewhat standard fare by Mozart and Bartok combined with offbeat works by Haydn and Sculthorpe. Their ability to absorb and idiomatically recreate such a wide range of styles was, to put it mildly, staggering. It was a rousing success for this Tognetti Troupe, so much so that they were called back for multiple encores.

The final encore was Tognetti's arrangement of Astor Piazzolla's "Oblivion" for string orchestra (sans bandoneon), and it was a sublime ending to an outstanding concert. In that performance, it was clear to me that the unique Piazzolla style had survived the journey from Argentina to Australia, and that, ... Read More
