Even the Gramophone, usually on Tebaldi's side no matter what, found her a bit stately and overpowering as the fragile Mimi, and the aged Serafin's conducting earned adjectives like "indulgent," and "a touch arthritic." None of these reservations are reflected in the five-star brigade at Amazon, where runaway enthusiasm trumps criticism. At the current super-bargain price from Amazon Marketplace, no one will be out of pocket trying this 1959 remake of Tebaldi's 1950 mono account under Erede -- Decca has both in print.

Listening to the two side by side, I was struck by how natural and unforced the young Tebaldi was in her vocal acting. On that account, her early Mimi combines dramatic credibility with voluptuous vocalism. By 1959 there wasn't much acting left beyond the generic: ... Read More

There is no reason to expect consensus on a work as richly and as often recorded as "Butterfly," but this 1957 recording (from what would become the golden era of RCA's opera catalog) is arguably one of the most complete interpretations of the work. By "complete" I refer not to the musical score (and its revisions) but to the consistency of the performances, both vocal and orchestral. Leinsdorf's handling of the score is one that repays repeated listening, precisely because it is unsentimental, amazingly responsive to the conversational character of much of the drama, while also capable of soaring lyricism at just the right moments. For example, Leinsdorf's pacing of the duet between Pinkerton and Butterfly at the close of Act 1 is rapturous, more so than any other recorded version apart from ... Read More

The comic operas of Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (1876-1948) possess a unique charm, especially those based - like this one - on the Venetian plays by the 18th century dramatist Carlo Goldoni. "I Quat(t)ro Rusteghi" (1906) translates roughly as "The 4 Curmudgeons" & is generally considered his masterpiece in this genre. The slender plot of Venetian middle-class life concerns 2 old-fashioned fathers who pre-arrange a marriage for their respective son & daughter; the wives contrive to set up a secret meeting between the young pair so they can find out if they like each other. The libretto is cleverly shaped so Wolf-Ferrari has maximum opportunity for a variety of solos & (particularly) ensembles. Verdi's "Falstaff" stands in the background, as indeed does the whole tradition of Italian opera buffa; ... Read More

8.Puccini: La Bohème from: Polygram Records
April 05, 1991
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Puccini: La Bohème
In my opinion, no one has come along to rival Tebaldi in her many Puccini roles. Her voice is mellifluous yet powerful. She is paired here with Bergonzi, who is equal to her in artistry. I much prefer this version to the Pavarotti/Freni outing. Freni is simply not one of the foremost talents of this century; her tone is childish at times, her vibrato annoying. I will gladly put up with D'Angelo's callow Musetta in this fine recording, which is surprisingly well engineered for its time.
