Maybe these don't represent absolutely the greatest duets in all opera. But they represent some awfully good ones! The CD begins with a duet from "Les Pecheurs des Perles" (Puccini) and ends with the gloomy Miserere (from "Il Trovatore," by Verdi). In between are many more operas, from Donizetti and Mozart to Strauss and Wagner. Some of the finer singers of the past half century appear in various of these duets.

A bit more detail on a handful of these to illustrate.

"Sull'aria" from Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro." Heather Harper and Judith Blegen sing the parts here. This is a sweet duet from the opera. The singer's voices meld well together and this represents a poignantly sung piece.

"Ah! Verrana a tell sull'aure," from Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor." ... Read More

I'm not opera literate, so I was looking for some kind of introduction that had some familiar arias and that would connect me to others that I had not heard. I liked that the notes with the cd indicated where a new listener may have heard some of the music (in a commercial, during an important scene in a movie, etc). This was the source of a lot of 'Ah ha!' moments. It even inspired me to rent a dvd of a live version of Turandot and to put others on my Netflix queue. I owe my newly aroused curiosity about opera, believe it or not, to Il Divo. I had to know what these guys sing when they're not reinterpreting pop songs. I'm glad I started this journey and this cd was a good start.

This is without doubt the best Turandot on disc. Nilsson's voice is more "free" compared to the RCA version but this might be a question of recording techniques. The three main parts work perfect together, they can not be bettered on disc. So - this is THE choice. To my very great astonishment EMI has chosen the recording with Maria Callas to their "Great recordings of the Century" series, not the one reviewed here. Callas sang the role a little more than 20 times just in the beginning of her career and she did not like it, she was afraid that it could destroy her voice, therefore she dropped it as soon as possible. Turandot was Nilsson's most sung role: over 300 times.
In one of his biographies Placido Domingo tells about singing in Turandot together with Nilsson at the Verona Arena. He had ... Read More

I bought this CD as a birthday present for my father and haven't actually heard the content myself. But because I ordered it, Amazon have prompted me to write a review. Certainly the feedback I'm getting is excellent and my Dad has derived hours of listening pleasure from it.

This CD will make an opera lover out of anyone. It features the great arias--all of which have been featured in movies. So many of these tunes are familiar but when they are heard with the great opera stars like Maria Callas, Kiri Te Kanawa, Pavorotti, etc. they are truly moving and very easy to listen to. I'm a rock and roller, but I find myself listening to this CD over and over.

There are a few recordings that I believe most opera lovers can agree on: the Beecham Boheme and the Callas Tosca stand at the top of the list. This Butterfly belongs in that group. There is not a weak link the entire recording. First and foremost, Butterly is a soprano's opera -- probably more so than any other opera. From her entrance until her death, Butterly is never offstage except for the brief period at the start of act III when sleeping. However, a beautiful voice is not enough. The ability to go from sounding like a 15 year old girl in act I to being almost weary in act III is not easily done. Renata Scotto has done it in this recording better than any one. Her's is the ultimate reading of the drama. She sounds much younger in Act I than in Acts II and III. For some, the highlight of the opera is Un ... Read More

this really is an amazing set. rarely are compilation sets filled with such consistently good music as well as offering the breadth and diversity found here. also, this is THE introduction to opera, as far as i'm concerned. if you don't enjoy opera after listening to this set, then opera is probably just not for you.
