exuberant, upbeat, joyous, hard to fault, in fact faultless, the musical selections: st louis blues by w c handy, elllington's blue rose, ella fitzgerald's a-tisket, a-tasket, the rodgers and hart numbers, sentimental journey; or regina carter's quartet swelled on some of the numbers by paquito d'rivera on clarinet and gil goldstein on accordion, instrumentalist choices you would expect from dave douglas or regina carter's cousin, james carter, which work well for regina carter on this recording. five of the twelve pieces have lyrics sung by either dee dee bridgewater or carla cook. a great feeling, listening to this cd.

"Being given the opportunity and honor to play this divine instrument was an experience that I cannot begin to put into words. This recording, Paganini: After A Dream" contains all of the emotion, excitement, hard work, obstacles, and faith that were endured to make this dream a reality. This recording is dedicated in memory of the incomparable bassist Ray Brown and my inspiring violin teacher, Gerald Beal; and to the birth of my niece, Alexandra Collette Carter." ~ Regina Carter ~

As someone who greatly appreciates violin music and the beautiful masterpieces of classical masters Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Gabriel Fauré, I find this recording, Regina Carter's "Paganini: After A Dream," a great source of musical enjoyment especially when shared with friends who have the same musical ... This CD was a very personal project for the artist in her attempts to reach her neice who apparently has some challenges. It is very interesting, but doesn't keep my attention the way some of her others do. I still prize owning it, as I will anything she records.

This C.D. has a wonderful mixture of jazz rhythms and creations. Regina Carter is extremely talented and has developed into a confident jazz violinist. She is also accompanied by extremely talented musicians inall the selections. I hadn't heard it before I bought it, but I'm very happy with this C.D.

Okay, I'll bite...

In an alternate universe, one wonders what Duke and Stray might have given us if they adapted Brahms, Mahler and Beethoven symphonies for their orchestra.

EKE's original long form compositions are true works of genius. Note Ellington Suites written for the Queen England in 1959 or his clever, uncompromising jazz nod to Tchaikovsky in "Arabesque Cookie" and Grieg's "Peer Gynt".

There are conductors who could handle a project like this credibly: Andre Previn, Gunther Schuller? That said, and despite heroic efforts of soloists both gifted and renown, nothing can save Sir Rattle and his orchestra (Cough, "band"). They are out of their element and beyond redemption on this album.

One star because Clark Terry is so beautiful. Nothing he contributes to ... Read More
