I was very pleased with this collection. It is simply just beautiful classical music that hasn't been dumbed down for babies, like so many other albums seem to be. It also does NOT have any 'new age' like adaptions, which was a big plus for me personally. My daughter has not had any problems drifting to sleep while it's playing. I would definitely recommend this as a great first CD for your baby!

I love this movie as an all time favorite and I loved the music, so I was so excited to get the soundtrack. This is very classical and period music, yet you will definitely be able to recognize it as the movie you loved so much. Also, very soothing.

Vaughan Williams: Serenade to Music; The Lark Ascending; Fantasia on Greensleeves; English Folk Song Suite; In the Fen Country; Norfolk Rhapsody No. 1

While this is a re-issue of a 1969 recording it is an excellent presentation by conductor Sir. Adrian Boult.

It's safe to say that Ralph Vaughan Williams is one of the finest British composers alongside Holst, Elgar, Britten, and Bax. His nine symphonies are pure proof of his genius: they're lovely, haunting, lyrical, intense, hot-blooded, ethereal, etc. Maestro Andre Previn leads the London Symphony Orchestra & Chorus with perfect control; no one misses a step. Sound quality is first-rate, and booklet is quite informative. This box set gets an A from me.

Though Barbirolli had a long association with Elgar (as Michael Kennedy remarks in his remarkably informative liner notes, he made no less than 6 recordings of Introduction & Allegro, including the first one in 1927 with an ensemble he had hired himself), it is for the conductor's take on Vaughan Williams' Tallis Fantasy (his second recording) that I bought this disc. It is, indeed, superb. The most remarkable feature of Barbirolli's conducting, I find (and this applies to many of his other recordings as well), is the weight he invests the music with. Close to the Tallis Fantasy's beginning the lower strings are instructed to play an eighth-notes bass accompaniment in pizzicati. It is marked "molto pesante". I've never heard it more pesante than with Barbirolli. It is Atlas walking with the weight of the world ... Read More

This is a beautiful CD. Vaughn Williams is my favorite classical composer and Neville Marriner's interpretation of his music is perfect. All of the tracks on this CD are fabulous!

Beautifully done, arranged, and selected. All are very good performances, and there are many lesser known but wonderful pieces such as the movement from Shostakovich's second piano concerto.

As an overview or introduction to some of Ralph Vaughan Williams most well-known and beloved works--the Tallis Fantasia, the Greensleeves Fantasia, The Lark Ascending--this set from Decca will service most needs. It features an attractive program that, alongside the more popular works, includes some that aren't so universally well-known yet probably deserve to be--namely the Oboe Concerto and the Concerto Grosso.
The problem I have, as someone who has known most of these works for many years, is with the performances. The wonderful, spritely Oboe Concerto is given a dull and quite slow performance that seems to want to bring out pastoral qualities that aren't entirely there (it has its pastoral moments, but it's actually a very vivacious, impish piece). I was quite disappointed when I first heard it and immediately ... Read More
