81.Eponymous by: R.E.M.
October 25, 1990
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Eponymous
R.E.M.'s music is among the most influential of all-time. Their hits like 'Orange Crush' and 'Losing My Religion' still get played on FM radio stations everyday.

But, unfortunately, their early years are overlooked for their more famous Warner Bros. recordings. And that's a real shame, because R.E.M.'s best music came from their years on the IRS label, which is now owned by Capitol.

This set, 'Eponymous' is the set to own if you are just starting your R.E.M. collection. It's got all of the major early IRS recordings from 1983-1988. I can't get enough of songs like 'Radio Free Europe,' 'The One I Love' and 'It's The End Of The World As We Know It,' all of which appear on this set.

And, Capitol gets tons of credit for remastering all of these classics. ... Read More

1. Wanderlust is a great choice for a single; the song reminds me of a lost Beatles track off of of Magical Mystery Tour. In the song Michael wants to, "kiss the astronauts when they salute to me me me me."

2. The Outsiders (alternate mix) is a pretty cool version because Michael Stipe does the recitation at the end of the song. On the album version Q-Tip makes a guest appearance at the end of the track.

3. Bad Day (live video from the screens in Zaragoza, Spain) shows the band performing during the Around the Sun tour on May 28, 2005. I do not care for the video because it moves around too much--staying on each clip for one second. The live video reminds me of the "Star 69" video the band did for the album Monster. If you like that kind of a thing then you will enjoy ... Read More

Music : Murmur
Along with The B-52's, Athens Georgia had a second classic debut to foist onto the world in the 80's. "Murmur" delivered a fully formed R.E.M. sound to an unsuspecting public, heard by musical cossnoti and launching thousands of new bands in their wake. Propelled by the jangle-pop of "Radio Free Europe" and undeniable band chemistry, this is one of the top albums of that decade.

The qualities that defined the first half of R.E.M.'s career are already in full bloom on "Murmur." Peter Buck's jangley but muscular guitar propelled the sometimes bucolic sounds of the atmospheric songs. The rhythm section of Mike Mills and Bill Berry managed the odd variety of songs with the appropriate style. And on top if it all were Michael Stipe's mumbling, incoherent vocals muttering vague lyrics (with ... Read More

86.Everybody Hurts by: R.E.M.

Music : Everybody Hurts
Everybody Hurts is, of course, one of R.E.M.'s classic singles. The reason to pick this CD up though, is the "B-Side" live version of Orange Crush, complete with a brief a cappella rendition of "Be All You Can Be." A must have for any R.E.M. enthusiast.

Have you noticed how many space-related bands there are around today ? theres MERCURY Rev, Space, Astr(o)id, and of Course, REM. **REM?**. Yes, REM- the band that sound like they came from Uranus. Ok, excuse the "humour"- this is what I really think of this song... it's funnier than that joke, and you should all realise that. From the stupid lyrics "that sugar cane that tasted good", which then murmur on about "Lima Beans" and "Lemonade" to the overall 'happiness' of the song, REM are a joke that got old halfway through the 80s. Please don't subject yourself to this rubbish, you don't deserve it, whatever you've done in your life. This is truly awful...and if you thought this was bad wait until you've heard the follow up, 'All the Way to Reno'- I'm beginning to think they're competing with their entire ... Music : Up
The first time I dropped this into my car player, I just didn't have the patience to listen to the whole thing. I'm hip to the notion that if I want IRS era stuff, I play those discs. Of course, the, "big time", excursion followed, so I have those discs to play when I want. "UP", on the other hand is a whole 'nuther thing.

The way it works for me is to play it on my home system while I'm occupied with something like cleaning up. Here is where you must bring to the table two things--you must really like Michael Stipe's voice, and you have to enjoy aural wallpaper once in a while.

I will be the first to warn you that this album is not for everyone...not even for all R.E.M. fans. But, if you let it, it just might creep into your good graces.
